K&N FIPK or Volant Air Box

Guys -- Just bought a 04 SE4x2 Crew -- and starting the mods ASAP. I will post progress as I move ahead (future mods -- Win XP computer with 15" Screen, Exhaust, Filter, Full Blown JL Audio System, 7-8" DVD system using exsting flip down with modifications, handfree/mp3 cell phone hookup)....I wanted to bounce opinons on the K&N FIPK replace system or the Volant Box. I understand there has been some concerns on the Volant box for fit, etc. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

the volant box has fitament problems and warranty concerns. The K&N flat out voids any intake-related warranty. Search the forum and you'll see way to many "installed K&N; MAF fried" threads for me to feel safe with the K&N.

K&N does NOT void the warranty of your intake. The dealers sell and install them. If you put it in yourself, you MAY have an issue if something like your MAF fails and they feel it was due to improper installation or over-oiling of the filter element which seems to be the case in almost every MAF-related problem with the K&N.

I seem to recall a recent post that said the fitment issues with the Volant CAI have been taken care of and that Volants most recent revision has no issues at all. As far as I know, there have been no MAF failures with the Volant. There have been some owners who had MAF failures when using the K&N but I'm not so sure it was due to the K&N. It may just seem that way because for every one Volant installed there must be 20 K&N units installed. Somebody suggested that the Titan may just have some flakey MAF's. Also heard that Volant uses a thinner oil and that they did this specifically to avoid fouling up MAF's. I personally have a K&N drop in element and have had no issues but I'm looking into the Volant CAI. This K&N/MAF/Warranty debate has been going on for some time now and I honestly don't think you will get a definitive answer. What you will get is a lot of opinions and facts that will ultimately make it harder for you to make a decision. Good luck!

my .02

I think regardless of the vendor you get your CAI from, you may find an "issue" or 2 you want addressed. I cannot speak for K&N as I have not bought anything from them, but as far as Volant goes, they (primarily Joe) have done, without exception, everything they told me they would do. The CS is 5 stars - yes, they've had problems, but have stood behind their product for me (and most others on this board from what I have read) so how can you argue with that?

I guess that was a nickels worth...

I ordered a volant last week from an online source. I paid a little extra to get it 2 day air. I called the next day to get tracking number and found out that the source I bought it from ordered from volant and once it got to them they then would then send it out, didnt sound like 2 day air to me. Here is where the good news comes in:

I then hung up and called Joe at Volant. Joe personally removed my CAI heading to this online source and then DROVE it to UPS himself and sent it out 2 day air to me. If that isnt customer service I dont know what is. At same time it makes me feel very comfortable that if I have any other problems he WILL make it right.

Thanks JOE!
Mike
