Holy wow is all I can say about these 5100's compared to stock. I removed the PRG 1.5" leveling kit, and got them installed at the lowest setting and the ride is amazing. You can tell I lost a bit of height, but not much at all, and what I gained back is so worth it. No more rattles over bumps, the front end isn't shaking me to pieces anymore and most important to me is the body roll is very reduced. They are certainly tighter feeling in a very good way. I can really feel the rears bouncing around now (those are next). If anyone is thinking about doing the same thing, I can post the before and after pics. Now, what is better, the HD's, or should I go with Bilstein's recommendation of 5100's all around?
I have a set of 5100's with less than 3000 miles on them I am looking to sell. They came off my 2011 Titan 4x4. They are for trucks with 0-1" of lift. Keep in mind these are only for a 4x4. Not sure if you are 2 or 4 wd. I lifted my truck so these will no longer fit.
The new design of the Bilstein's has an aluminum spring seat and adjustable surclip perches to give you the desired ride height. Bad thing is that you have to adjust prior to installing.

Yes, it looks like I easily gained 1/2". I have the stock size tires, and the leveling kit was 1 1/2"'s. I never liked it so I took that off, put the 5100's on and it still has just a little bit of rake, but the front tires now look like they are normal again. With the leveling kit, the front tires look tiny in that huge amount of space. I don't mind a bit of rake and I wanted to gain a bit more performance so I went with the 5100's only and I think it's perfect!
The darker photos are of the leveling kit, and the brighter ones are with the 5100's only. My driveway is on a slight incline, but it still shows that there really isn't that big of a difference.
Can we get the Bilsteins valved and length to work with a rear 3in leaf pack drop or 3rd leaf spring removal?
I have removed my 3rd leaf spring and find that the 5100's are too soft. I went back to the HD's and I think that they are just a tad stiffer. I also have chopped bump stops & AirLift bags with on board compressor to stiffen up the ride. Without it, it would bottom out like crazy. I do use the bed and tow trailers that is another reason for my bags. Also it adjusts the comfort along the choppy roads. If you want to get different valving i'd recommend to have some FOX Racing shocks and have them revalved. We sell em' but would need to know what specs you need. But i think the HD's is fine. Let us know.
What if I have the 5100's up front, set at 0, everything else stock, can I run the 5100's in the rear with the PRG variable height shackles to lower the rear and level it again? It looks like the PRG shackles have different settings but I want to make sure I can do this, before I buy either (shocks first), and how close would I be? Would it work? Or would the HD's be a better bet for the rear? I may never do the shackles, but just keeping my options open.
I have ICON coilovers at the lowest level, Removed the 3 leaf spring and have the 5100's. The difference in the 5100's is that they are Zinc plated to match the front and maybe longer. The valving is slightly softer than the HD's. If you plan on lowering the truck (i.e. 3rd leaf removed) it lessens the spring rate. Can you add an adjustable shackle? Yes! but you are closer to the bumpstops. Even with the bumpstops removed you are bangin' the frame. This i wouldn't do. So this is when you need to go for a stiffer valving. What valving? It depends on what you want to do. You can buy the 5100's and then send them into Bilstein to get re-valved... Their shock techs are good at what they do so they can help you out. I don't know what their turnaround is. You CAN, purchase the Fox Shocks from us and we can have them re-valved pretty fast. But again, you would have to figure out the spring rate, weight of the truck etc. With all of this, will it stop bangin' on the bumpstops? NO! Lowered trucks usually install a C-Notch kit. If you've looked no one has it or I can't seem to find one. If there is.. I am not aware and may want to do it. I have AirLift Bags so i can control ride comfort and maybe some slight ride height adjustment. With 20psi in the bags, i'm never on the bumpstops (i cut my bumpstops in half) without the air, it's a harsh ride and hittin' bumpstops all the time. I've even filled the bed with fire wood and towed a trailer full of wood too (bags at 20 psi) Will the bags solve it? No, I still think it needs a stiffer shock or stiffer springs preferrably with the same spring rate and without the 3rd leaf removed. National Spring or Deaver can make a spring pack with spring rates in mind. Is all of this too much information to think about?? YES! I've been there and have this current set up and wish for these improvements. Adjustable shackles alone will not give you want. Remove the 3rd leaf will sit nice. But again... you're back to the bumpstop problem. Correct me if i'm wrong (guys with lowered T's) You may encountered the same or solved the problem. If you have post up and let us know.

Great info! When you say that the valving is slightly softer, will the 5100's give a better ride than the HD's? The front 5100's ride like a dream but yet feel tighter in the corners and that is awesome. I would love to get that great of a ride in the back, I think I might just do the 5100's and be done with it for now. Wish list is long!

For on-off road use the 5100's are great!! They made the 5100's so you can off road without being too stiff. HD's are made for primarily for ON road use and maybe 10% off-road. If you look at the specs (shock valving) there is a difference. BUT to an average consumer you may not feel the difference if you are ON road. Stiffer HD valving is great if you plan on taking off the over load to control the softer spring rates. Do i Make sense?
