Re: DIY - Air Box Mod

I just did it recently. Not sure about any power gains, but I like the sound at WOT. I used the old hot knife trick. Works well.

I wouldn't hesitate one second on doing it, I'm very very pleased with the results and the new pattern of air flow. It was done months ago with a red hot knife without unbolting anything.

I get a lot of resonation from it because of the aluminum fender liners I have. I put a small piece of dyno-mat inside the AFE, it stopped most of it but still get some vibration at WOT.

I'm running an Amsoil dry drop-in, here's a thread on it: Update on DIY airbox mod and Amsoil Eaa-104 air filter.

It's slightly louder than the stock setup, but makes a beautiful Waaaaaaaa sound when floored.

Yes, you won't have to remove anything, and the red hot knife was a long kitchen knife heated till it turned red, so you are melting through the snorkel and not sawing it.

Re: DIY - Air Box Mod

Most people probably used a butane torch or something like that. I didn't have one and didn't wanna pay another $12 for this free mod, so I just used an old cutlary knife and my propane camping stove to heat it. Ghetto yes, but it worked.

Re: DIY - Air Box Mod

I've not been keeping up with TT lately so as soon as I read this thread I went outside, removed my airbox, and did the mod. I then drove to Auto Zone and got a K&N filter. Initial seat of the pants tells me there might be a small gain but that might just be my imagination too. I do like the way it sounds though. It's not too loud but the difference is obvious and the extra snarl coming from under the hood is rather satisfying :-)

Re: DIY - Air Box Mod

I did it today. I also shorted the tube going into the fender. That thing was way to long.. no need to be in so deep.

Re: DIY - Air Box Mod

I did this mod a few weeks back... I couldn't be any happier with the 10 mins I spent doing this. I only drive this truck on the weekends and let me tell you I'm addicted to the sound I get at full throttle. Needless to say I drive like a bat outta he!! everywhere I go now just to hear that addicting sound!!! LOVE IT!

Re: DIY - Air Box Mod

I have just put up a very short (12 seconds,) video of my truck with the airbox mod. Other than that my truck is completely stock (until tomorrow that is ;-)

I have all the windows up during this clip. Pardon my son talking from the back seat at the end :-)

I'll likely post another vid tomorrow after getting my Flowmaster 50 series and stainless exhaust tip...
