do i really need to dig up the volant dyno charts, i believe Jetech's, for you to see the 20 ft lb gain? Cutting off 3 inches of pipe is not the same as replacing the entire intake system from the throttle body on, which is basically what you just said.

Id assume that the second of the two would be more accurate as the engine would have had more running time to compensate for the increase/ change in airflow. Wouldnt you agree? It shows a peak gain of 16hp and 20ft lbs. Nothing to snuff at in my opinion.

Somebody consistent at the track, like The Head, needs to test the volant and stock mod back to back.

what about cutting the end of the pipe off at the box, then screwing on a universal K&N cone on the end? I thought of that, or extending the pipe from the end of the this cut pipe closer to the headlight for cooler air and adding the filter on the end of the pipe. Any thoughts?

you don't have to cut to try it. if you just use a screwdriver to push down the snaps on the tube at the and bottom, you can take off the pipe that leads from the airbox to inside the fender and you are left with a half to one inch stub on the outside of the airbox. I don't think there is enough room though to bend in another 90 degree pipe and run it up to the front. Its better to suck from the fender well. You could open up the air entries into the fender well though. I run my air box with just the stub and a rubber sewer pipe connector between the airbox and the fender liner. with the right connection and an airbox hole as big as the oval hole in the fender liner, you could get the equivalent of the volant. juma

intake mod

the tube will extend from the airbox, through the fender well, and then make a 90 degree turn, to the tune of 4 inches only, this puts the tube, about 4 inches closer to the front.

Why not just take the air box off, and attached a Cone Style Filter directly to the MAF Sensor, like alot of the honda/nissan peps do? And like build a box or shield around the filter to redirect the air?

Airbox mod

I am not a mechanical engineer, but do have a degree in chemistry and physics.

The explanation for the accumulation of debris at that particular portion of the filter is because that is where the direction of the intake air stream carries the "particles" in with the air.

However, they have Thousands of times the mass of the air carrying them and cannot change direction without significant energy to do so.

So basic kinetic energy sends those particles into the filter at that location, meanwhile the air swirls into the airbox to fill the vaccume created by the open throttle body.

I bet you if you could measure pressures at different points inside the airbox, filtered and non-filtered sides, you would see a almost complete ballance of pressures throughout the box.

Just my opinion.

Moose - Are you saying this mod causes no reward? I understand your comments but can't read a negative or positive in it.
Thx

Let me just say...

I did this mod last night in all of about 7 minutes, wow was it ever easy!

When it came to the cutting part I used my wood handsaw.

The reason for this is the blade is like 5" tall so as it cut down through the plastic, the blade was held straight in the cut slot. My finished cut is nearly perfectly straight and true.

As far as any hp gains - you have got to be kidding me... This monster 5.6 V8 already has 305, like my but is going to notice a few more? A dyno test or a bunch of drag runs or maybe even a G-analyst would tell, but my but can't.

So why did I do this mod? I did this mod for 3 reasons.
1- I liked that people said the engine would be a bit louder under WOT, and it is, I like it.
2- I too saw the dirt collecting on my Air Hog in that one lower corner, I would just as soon use more of the filter face and not quickly plug up one corner.
3- If there really is a horsepower gain it was worth 7 minutes of my time.

Nice little mod and write up.
Now about that growl, maybe I made my cut too straight because I picked up a snarl, not a growl.

I know this is quite off topic but I couldn't get a response on a different thread, I am hoping i can here....I just have one question as of now regarding the throttle body spacer. I wanted to know if it makes a difference in performance and gas mileage??? There is an eBayer that has a few for sale, one of the models is called "AutoXtreme Throttle Body Spacer" for $65.00. the next model is called "Helix Power Tower" for $82.00 and the last model is called "Airaid PowerAid Throttle Body Spacer" for $107.00. Any feedback from these items will be greatly appreciated!!

Do a search for that. There are a ton of threads involving throttle body spaces on here. I think you will definetely find all of your answers. Good luck.
