Thank you very much Aggie. I stumbled across this post tonight and was intrigued so I went out to the garage and checked it out. Immediately after seeing my filter this was a no brainer and I went to work and did the mod.

The intake almost appears that Nissan's Engineers wanted the intake to be very free flowing but somewhere along the lines some marketing genius said it was too noisy and the quick fix was to extend the snorkel.

I took a ride after doing it and there is definitely a difference, nothing major but the typical type results I've had from installing CAI's on other cars as far as response and constant power. I have a feeling a K&N drop in will get similar results to the K&N CAI currently available.

Looking at the design though, I cannot see how the K&N CAI can possibly help more than this cheap mod with a K&N drop in. The K&N CAI has a cone filter with a heat shield and the cone sits near the hole in the fender. Though the heat shield helps to keep engine heat away from the cone it is not an enclosed system that draws cool air from the fender. The Volant on the other hand, nice! but I don't know that I could justify spending anything more compared to this cheap and easy mod.

Thanks again,

troutspinner

I did it tonight after looking at mine, too. I just used my Dremel with a cutting bit and them cleaned it up with a sanding bit. Maybe a little more sound. Whether or not there is more power, maybe.

Hey Aggie,
I think you have started a "thing" with this mod. Cheap & fairly easy to do. Did mine last night. I followed your instructions to the letter. I was really careful not to break the plastic, but, oh well, did it anyway. Ah! Duct Tape; What a wonderful invention. Broke a small piece off on the upper side but taped it back. Unplugged the battery and went back to hook it up & of the the alarm goes beserk and when it's 7:00 in the morning the last thing you want to do is have the alarm blairing. Of course my brain was in total disfunction & just couldn't seem to find the right button on the key fob. So went out about an hour later & hooked up, got the alarm turned off & took a short drive. Seemed to be slightly louder & a little quicker but will know after driving a few more times. All of us who are always trying to find a less expensive way to go owe guys like you a lot of thanks for coming up with these kinds of ideas. Thanks for the info.

Bobf49: I agree with your statement -- thanks to those who have forged ahead of us.

In your opinion, how loud is "slightly louder" -- is it
a. 'I can't hear myself think' loud
b. 'What's that sound?' loud
c. 'Did you hear a noise?' loud

Also, nice pic of your rig!

It's slightly louder, and you can hear more intake noise at WOT.

It's not as loud and impressive as the Volant, but it will do until I have the 250 bones to throw down for it...

I dont know how much in improves HP, but it's free, so why not give it a try???

Still have this mod, with the K&N Drop in filter. Have noticed no adverse affects.
Bouns time is finaly here and I will be going with a Volant CAI soon, this looks like you will get better HP/TQ and mpg.

Can anyone who did this mod give us an update, please.

I have been searching all the threads on this mod and was wondering if we can get an update from anyone who did this to their OEM airbox.
What is the filter looking like now?
What is (if any) the performance you have noticed?
What is your gas milage, (increase, or decrease)?
What are any other issues that you have expierenced (good or bad)
Any other information would be appreciated.

Thanks guys...

I removed mine just last week. I expereinced no difference in gas mileage. I did experience a little more grunt from the engine after doing so...which I liked. Here are some pics after 3 months of my air hog filter. Hope this helps.

Positive, It's called "HOT RODDIN" uncompromising something the factory compromised to make these engines a little quieter for the masses! And cheap too! I intend to try it soon. Speaking of Roddin' to answer something posted early on this about Intake runners. As general rule long + skinny increase velocity and torque at low RPM ,short and fat increase HP At higher RPM. If you have enough cam and compression. Just check out any spped catalog for heads and intake manifolds.
