Stillen blower coming

I was at the Mossy Performance Nissan show on Saturday and a very nice (but info stingy) rep from Stillen was there.

He had a urethane front bumper prototype (one-piece) that was part of a body kit they are building.

He agreed with my negative comments on the design of the Vortech blower and said there's would be out in '05 (wouldn't commit to a date but said they are working on it now).

He said it will be similiar to their blower for the 350Z that sits right on top of the V of the motor and will be more like a roots/screw-type I am interested in.
I wonder if that is accurate or just a comparison... as we may need a cowl hood if that is the case. Hope they are building it to fit the stock hood.

Stillen will also offer their 3yr/36k mile power train warranty with this blower too.

I was considering the Vortech but after this news, I will wait.

Thanks, that is good news. I have talked to a few people with Stillen charged Zs and they are quite happy.

Their Z blower adds over 100 hp, that's a 3.5 liter so imagine what they can do with another 2.1 liters!!?
I will try to be patient but... kid in a candy store affect comes over me.

Like an extremely powerful fan driven by crank.

It is like putting an extremely powerful fan just behind the air filter.(a fan with a duct around it).The fan will "blow" so hard that you will have greater than atmospheric pressure in the intake. In a non "blown" vehicle the intake can never have greater than atm pressure(about 14.7 psi at sea level). The number they speak of 5-8 PSI is that much over atm(14.7).The HP increase is usually in direct relationship to the increase in pressure. 5 PSI is 14.7+5 /14.7 times say our 250 hp=332 hp.A big power increase-much more than a cool air intake and headers-exhaust(maybe 30 hp).
The "fan "is driven by a belt connected to the crank. The fan might not really look like a fan-could look like a screw,or a tiny fan(turbine)
Other ways of driving a fan is by using the exhaust gases-a turbocharger.Probably more efficient in terms of power used to increase in power, but the plumbing and lag are a little"harder' to work around.
The biggest problem is "pinging"-detonating because the 93 octane woun't be able to handle the increased pressure-temp.This is why 5-7 psi is pretty much the limit on vehicle with stock compression. An intercooler(a fancy radiator) to cool the pressurized air can help pinging, and increase power.Aftermarket Superchargers usually cost about $4500+installation.
Well, that is about all I know abour superchargers .Charlie
PS Diesels can get away with much larger increases in boost than the 5-7 psi that gasoline spark ignition motors can use. This is why you see such huge claims for turbo Diesel aftermarket stuff..

PC,

I think the blower from Stillen would be very much like the 350Z variety and I would almost bet they change the factory hood with a 'cut' like they did the 350Z one and put a fiberglass rise over it. With our 'wide' hood, I would hope they don't go too aweful of a bulge on it...maybe a raise of less than 2" and about 14-18" inches accross?

The Brickyard colored 350Z with the Stillen Pkg is one of my club members...they love thiers and Stillen has been right behind them through the whole process. Keep in mind, I have heard numerous things about Stillen over the years...if your 'distant' from them, you might not recieve the same level of support (Saw this on previous 300ZX guys). IF your Socal, you'll probably get a much better 'feel' in the long run adding thiers.

Here is a picture of the Stillen setup on that Z taken last Thursday at the Murrieta Vets parade we were in with the club.

I would consider dumping my nitrous stuff if they make this kind of quality piece. I'm just really, really curious how the ECM and fuel system mods are being made.
This is by no means a backhanded remark, I'm just wanting info.

A question from one of the uninitiated... What will a blower do to gas milage, if anything? If I get one just for the fun of it, no racing, will my engine have a "normal" life expecancy? What are the negatives?

I hear if your light on the pedal or have a small pulley you'll get better milage with all s/c in general...

The only problem with that theory is who would spend that kind of money on a S/C and then drive it lightly. I would have to have my foot surgically removed from the gas pedal.

Because of titantalk and everyone's sound bites of exhaust, i went and got a custom flowmaster dual exhaust put in, and i love it, along with everyone else that hears it.

please dont tempt me further with more supercharger talk...

I wonder if they are playing with a modified Magnacharger system? It is a cool setup, and should be easy to adapt to your motors. The big problem is not the mechanics, but programming the PCM (or whatever you guys call your engine computers).

Superchargers are cool
