CA laws regarding equipment on vehicles

I was wondering if a certain exhaust mod would be illegal in California and found the actual State Vehicle Codes to be quite helpful. So if you are ever wondering what the actual laws are about things like mufflers, window tint, lights, noise limits, etc., then you can check out the State Vehicle Codes on-line at: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/vc/vctoc.htm
info is in Division 12 Equipment of Vehicles

(c) A person may not engage in the business of installing a whistle-tip onto a motor vehicle's exhaust system.

(d) For purposes of subdivisions (a) and (c), a "whistle-tip" is a device that is applied to, or is a modification of, a motor vehicle's exhaust pipe for the sole purpose of creating a high-pitched or shrieking noise when the motor vehicle is operated.

I have it too, Bub rubb is awesome. Came across the video a couple of years ago on supraforums, us MKIII supra owners were stunned and appauled that bub rubb drove a MKIII supra, then proceded to run a stop sign, nearly hit a parked car and maybe worst of all installed "whistle tips" on a supra.

On another note, keep track of state wide legaslation regarding vehicle equipment laws. Here in NH the law used to state until just months ago that any exhaust that is louder than stock is considered modified and illegal. Cops used this to basically pull anybody over at any given time, mostly import cars. In fact just last week I had to go to court, I won thank you, for a modified exhuast ticket. The cop didn't know the law had been repealed, even though i attempted to enlighten him at the time of the stop. Worst part is my car is not even loud. If you live in MA and care about being able to customize your vehicle you need to pay attention to a piece of legaslation, some lunatic liberal in the house every year tries to pass a law stating any exhaust other than stock is illegal. One of these years it will pass, and its always easier to start a law than to repeal it. Luckily for us in NH we have some members in the house that are friends of automotive enthusiasts.

I was looking for the part on window tinting but I can't find it...maybe it's too early in the morning for me!

I realize it's illegal here in California to tint the front side windows, but what are the consequences nowadays? I had heavy tint on my mini-truck years ago and I got popped once, but it was a mere slap in the hand- pay $10 or so, and remove it. I hear it's a moving violation or something like that now. Can anyone enlighten me before I go and get them done?

The window tint laws are under section 26708 "Material Obstructing or Reducing Driver's View" - here's the direct link: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d12/vc26708.htm

I never heard of a fine unless you get caught for your 2nd 3rd offenses...

My family (mostly my sister, mother) got caught with the tint and they both had to get it torn down and report the action to another police officer and submit the ticket back.

We had it on a civic, crown victoria...

I live in So Cal and my tint on the truck is around 40-50% (30% is the back so you know how dark that is then) The stock tint was at 70%. Not a huge difference IMO.

A friend of mine in Florida was riding his SV-650 and passed a cop that was sitting on the side of the road.
The cop wasn't running RADAR nor was he moving (if he'd been driving the speed limit and my friend passed him then he would of known he was speeding) so he couldn't write him a ticket for speeding.

So instead he wrote him a ticket for not obeying traffic signage. Guess which sign. The SPEED LIMIT sign!!!!!

I'm pretty sure my friend is gonna win this case in court.
