Warning to k&n cai users

Hey now it's been quite a while, so let me catch ya up. A long while ago I posted "titan dies on road today" anyway it turns out that it wasn't the maf after all. In the end it was determined by the dealer and the district rep that the ground wire under the bracket from the k&n had come loose causing the coils to misfire and the motor loaded up with fuel. This burned/broke the cats up into tiny little pieces. After a long drawn out ordeal with the dealer they voided my warranty and i'm out 2k to fix the truck. Learn from my mistake if you have a k+n check the ground wire, and maybe a little blue locktite wouldn't hurt. If you are planning on buying one don't.

Sorry to hear your bad news. I went stright out and looked to see if I could find this ground wire. No ,luck. Could you post a pic of what they said went wrong or came loose. I don't have any ground wires on the brackets anywhere.

It's the mid bracket that supports the tube. It connects to the front cover on the driver's side head. There is a ground wire with a loop that the bolt goes thru.It was in the instructions step 16 & 17

Got it, thanks, It was tight but I gave it a twist to be sure. I also checked the rest of the clamps too and they had wiggled a little loose.
Thanks for the heads up.

I learned the hard way, never use locktite on electrical conn's. It makes a great insulator when it dries. Suggest a star type lockwasher and put a dab of silicone on top after torquing.

What is K&N going to do for you? Don't they have any kind of Quality Control? I've never had any problems with K&N products before, I just ordered one for my Titan a couple of days ago, Thanks for the heads up.

Not trying to start anything, but I don't see this as a problem caused by K&N. Seems to me that it is the responsibility of the installer to be sure that all the bolts and screws are properly tightened.

I think that there needs to be a little claraficition here. The off road version cai has the bracket that attaches to the ground wire and the tube. The 77 model has no bracket that attaches to the tube. The off road model has a plastic tube, while the 77 has an aluminum tube. The 77 model is also easier to assemble.
I had the offroad model on my 04, and have the 77 on my 05. The off road model has a bracket that attaches to the hole in the fender, while the 77 has a bracket that attaches to the ABS sensor. It took 20 minutes less to assemble the 77 over the offroad model.

which did you like better. Aside from ease of installation, which seemed to be better.

I don't see a dimes worth of difference between the two. The filters are the same size. While I didn't measure the diameter of the two tubes, there may be a slight diffference (off road maybe larger).
The only other difference is that the 77 has an aluminium tube vrs. a plastic tube. Don't know the plus minus of either tubes.
The 77 was much easier to install.
Bottom line is that I am happy with the performance of all of my airchargers(currently 5 vechicles ) Never had a maf malfunction.
