Guys, i know about doing the airbox mod and i have done this already, but how about tearing apart the stock box, basically cutting the plastic apart, but leaving the part that holds the MAF part of the tube? You could install some sheet alluminum to the back, drill some holes in the thing and attach an MAF adapter from a old Nissan nissan 240 sx or sentra Cold air intake setup. they sell the things seperate. You would attach this "MAF adapter to the plastic piece and then install a universal K&N cone filter to the adapter. I have plans to do this for a spare JWT POP intake cone filter that has a alluminum air-horn. This is for a 1995 200sx SE-R, but the opening is the same, so I am going to modify the stock intake box since you can't unbolt the air-box and simply install the JWT POP like my old 2000 frontier I used to have. I guess this was a cost savings to do this one piece unit?
Anyhow Anybody else do anything drastic as to destroy the box to do this mod?

I thought about it, and I believe that it will work as well as the aftermarket air boxes. I didn't do it because of the warranty issue. I saw the 4" PVC setup on the dodge hemi and saw how well it worked at the dragstrip and thought, we could do something like that.
I did what you are talking about,I cut off the air box and stuck a K&N cone filter on the intake tube. The cone filter is 10 inches long and it works great I haven't had any issues with it.
The only thing I see about the stock tube, is you still have the factory silerncers (or whatever those little tubes are). If you could cut those off and plug the holes, it would be the same as the aftermarket CAI's.

Where did you make your cuts, what and where did you get your parts, how is the filter supported/braced? In your picture you have a nice and large filter set-up and though I have thought along the same lines as you, I do need for it to be reversable for Calif. smog inspections! Thanks.
The only problem I see is that the filter moving/vibrating and causing some crazy readings with the MAF sensor. I know that I've had problems like this before with my GN.....but, I'm just wondering.

I agree. But I would also cut out the accordian section and splice a section of 3" abs pipe with no-hub type connectors. There's a lot of friction there along the walls of that tube section.

thanks for posting. have you guys seen a JWT POP charger? It has a machined alluminum velocity stack the filter attaches to. The old style MAF's had the box bolted to that thing. You pull the box off and bolt the POP charger alluminum onto it.
I will take pics tonight of the thing and Email them in. I am planning on taking an MAF adapter and reversing it, using a rubber hose piece to attach the plastic to the new MAF adapter. I have to buy the adapter first. I have it so I am going to try to not have to spend too much. I had the JWT POp from my old Frontier 2000.
