FYI About K&N Drop Ins

Hey guys I just thought I would share this with you. Yes, I know we're talking about 2 different vehicles here but, I see a lot of talk about drop in K&N filters on here and well, when I use to be a Dodge guy we had a few guys dyno with a K&N filter and with the factory paper filter. The dynos showed a 3 hp/3 ft lbs of torque loss with the K&N filter. Just thought I would pass that along since most people here are saying that they aren't seeing any gains with a K&N Filter.

We have no clue some people thought the filters were over oiled from K&N. If you guys want I'll try to dig up a link from the Dodge Truck Site.

The Fram Air Hog is better. Less pressure drop than K&N and more surface area. It's hard for me to believe that the K&N loses hp, unless like you say, the filters were over-oiled. I've tested the press drops across the K&N, Air Hog, and Nissan oe filters on my Titan, and the K&N and Air Hog both flow more air than the stock. Increased airflow=increased Volumetric Eff=increased hp, albeit, slight. You'll gain the most from any of these filters if you do the airbox mod....not sure if the Dodge guys were running unmodded stock boxes, or what. Also, 3 hp/tq is within margin for error on any dyno, I would guess.

Question

Hey Rocky.........what's the deal with the stock NISSAN filters??????? They now use oil too????? Is another paper filter brand without oil as good as the new NISSAN filter?? I still have a new K&N in the attic!

i think the airbox mod hes talking about is the trimming of the inlet tube inside the airbox itself.

Tom...the Nissan filter I tested was the pinkish one, which I believe is slightly oiled, according to what some have posted. I haven't tested any other paper filters against the K&N and Air Hog...just my original Nissan one. If I was to stick with paper, I would use the Nissan one, cuz I know it's a good quality filter.

Yes, that's right. I did the mod to the inlet pipe and am using the Air Hog panel filter. I had the K&N panel filter for around 5K mi, then switched to the Air Hog after seeing the results of my tests. I haven't noticed any mileage benefits, but performance is slightly better with either the K&N or Air Hog with the box mod, vs box mod with paper filter.

Yes but didn't you also say you changed your engine oil then too???????
Too bad you didn't just change the filter for a tank or two first. If the oil was old then the new oil alone might have brought mpg's up? I don't think your test will have hard data do you?? On my last Toyo truck I noted at the end of a oil cycles the mpg's dropped a little....and that was with the K&N filter too.

Thats why I keep checking the gas mileage. And as for the filtering of the Airhog when I have the oil analysis done at 7000 miles that will give us an idea about that.

OK......Do you think you can quantify what percent of contribution ( MPG INCREASE ) each air/oil change makes for your Titan while you are getting data?
Wonder how your numbers would/will compare to a low mileage Titan say in the 3-9K area? with the same conditions.?
Aren't you on flat land area??
I hope the Fram works out and the oil too.

Uh is that a trick question?

That's kind of like me trying to tell you that I can tell I have a HP increase with a 305 HP engine just by driving it.

I know I should have done one or the other but not both. Sadly by the time I saw the increase in the MPG the old Air filter was long gone to the dump.
