It's a piggy back electronic system. It intercepts the signal and modifies it. Not a bad setup but ex$pensive ($600+)... I am still waiting for a reprogrammer. That way I don't have to visit a "Technician" or send in my ECU to be reprogrammed.
From their website.
To make the Unichip specific to a vehicle type without a PnP kit available, or an engine that has been modified, a “Real-Time” tuned Custom Map will need to be created. A Unichip technician loads a configuration file into a blank Unichip module, with your vehicle on a dynamometer. With that data, the Unichip understands which signals are located on which pin connections. Once the Unichip understands the pin connections, the tuner tells the Unichip what control inputs to make when the feedback signals on the various pins reach certain values. That means the trained Unichip technician with your vehicle on a Unichip Dynamometer has complete control of what is happening inside your engine.
