My Titan w/ K&N 77Series Intake

Just thought some of you would like to see dyno charts of my Titan

I got called in to K&N Filters here in Riverside early April because they wanted to use my truck to do some product testing. Found out they were testing their 77 Series intake.

They had my truck for 2 days and here are the results.

http://www.kandn.com/dynocharts/77-6012.pdf

As you can see my stock Titan with just a K&N Panel filter made 276hp to the wheels.

With the 77 Series intake it made 283hp

Also, the first day they tested my Titan completly stock (with the Nissan OEM filter) and it dynoed at 263hp

so
Stock - 263hp
Stock+K&N Panel Filter - 276hp
Stock+K&N 77 Series Intake - 283hp

I calculated roughly 16% drivetrain loss from stock engine output and came out to around 328hp (engine hp) with the intake

What do you guys think?

That is a pretty good HP gain! What was the model # they used on your truck for the 77 series?

Almost to good.

If so, I'd like that part number too. I went to K&N's website but they didn' t list a part number for the 77 Series to fit the Titan.

Thanks,
Matt

I'm confused. I love K&N and have drop-in's or cone type (Aircharger type) on every vehicle I've owned for the last 10 years or more, but something doesn't seem right with the dyno chart.

It says that it is comparing the base engine with the 77 series. Is that the stock Nissan filter? If so, the gain is between 7 and 8 horses, and even then over a pretty narrow part of the power band.

Where is the dyno run for the 13 horsepower increase from the stock Nissan paper filter to the K&N drop in? I'd like to see it.

My reason: I have a K&N drop in right now and with the airbox mod, I'm very happy with it. I have the Aircharger also and can move back and forth between the two with about a half hour of change out time.

I don't have a chassis dyno. I do have a G-Tech Pro. While I don't necessarily believe its horsepower and torque numbers as absolutely accurate, it should show changes very well. What I am getting is much lower. I get maybe 3 horses extra with the drop in. That's all. With the Aircharger, I get about 3 or 4 more, for a total of 6 or 7 horse improvement over the stock filter. This would be consistent with your dyno chart if the 77 is being compared to the stock paper filter.

The increase is, indeed in a very narrow power band, mostly between 4000 and 5000 rpm. I get a lot of noise from the Aircharger, which my wife does not appreciate, so I stick to the drop in most of the time.

Do you really have proof of a 13 horse gain from the drop in? That would be great. I'd like to see that and wonder why I'm not seeing that type of gain?

I have the stock (nissan paper filter) dyno chart in my truck. I'll see if I can scan it. To me, i don't think I would be able to tell the difference between 10 or 20 horse power. I have even considered taking hte intake off and just putting the stock airbox in because my butt dyno doesn't fell that great umph when I step on the gas. I wish I could set up a 1/4 mile run to test both.

The part number is 77-6012KP (the P is for polished if it matters)

also, if it matters, I was running Mobile 1 Synthetic 5w30

What did you get in return for allowing K&N to abuse your truck? Im hoping they gave you the cold air intake.

So, I guess we have the truck that is on the high end of the quoted, "10-20 HP." I've always wondered which truck that was...

Yeah I got the intake that they used for testing. Apparently this intake is CARB approved for California so thats why they called me in. They used me for some tests and I said I would be getting a carb sticker when K&N gets them.

I'll probably call tomorrow and let them know how this month has been and ask for the sticker.

I scanned the dyno sheet of when my truck was stocky with the Nissan paper filter. I'll post it tomorrow morning since i'm at work right now

Only a 7 HP increase for the intake vs the drop-in? I'd say that was not worth the cost of the intake. 13 HP for the filter makes sense and should easily pay for itself in fuel economy.

Thanks for the info.

That's if he got a true 13 hp gain. The margin of error between dyno runs has to be taken into consideration. Again, realizing that acelerometers like the G-Tech have their limitations and the actual values perhaps should not be taken literally, they can show gain or loss, and all I'm getting is about a 3 bhp gain with the drop-in. Better than nothing and a cheap improvement. I'm gonna keep the Aircharger, though. It produces a little more, maybe 3 or 4 more for a total of about 7 bhp or so. If I ever upgrade the exhaust, the combo might be better than the sum of each alone, if that makes sense.

Would like to see that dyno run comparing paper to K&N drop in.

any idea what the difference between the 77 kit and the FIPK is - it seems that K&N is testing the FIPK to 11.21 HP

I find 13 hp for a drop in hard to swallow. The next one to dyno needs to just pull the filter and do a run. You should see at least 15hp difference. I have always seen maybe a 2 hp gain for the drop ins......I don't doubt that it showed on your runs but if I saw 13hp for a drop in I would have immediatly put the stock one back in and did it again. Too bad they want $120 to dyno at the local shop or I would do it.

Thumbs up 77 Series

I installed the 77 Series on my Titan today. Easy install, Nice polished tube, HUGE filter, & it's a perfect fit . The K&N Part Number is: 77-6012KP ran me $239 through NAW (Northwest Automotive Warehouse ) here in San Antonio. Sounds great with the Flowmaster 50SUV exhaust .
