I have a 2004 xe 2wd, from what I have read and observed on my truck,it has 2 cats and 2 resonators. I am considering blowing out (breaking up) the resonaters for bothe performance and fuel millage upgrades. Has any one done this before, especially to the resonators,I have done cats on other autos but never resonaters. Are they able to be broken apart like cats?
To further improve the flow of your exhaust, you have to replace the OE resonators (in a 4x2) with either a straight pipe (not recommended because of poor sound quality) or "bullet type" resos (straight thru and better option). Either way, this has to be custom fabricated by your local exhaust shop. Like stated by Sammy earlier, the OE resos narrow severely to 1 7/8" at some point. The efficiency of any exhaust (after-market or otherwise) is only as good as the flow allowed by the narrowest point of the entire exhaust system.
A second point of restriction is the Y-pipe section. The pictures of the Y below paint a thousand words. The after-market cat-back systems improves this Y restriction.
So if i have read the information in this forum right..... when i get my awesome new Titan (hopefully very soon) i can take it to an exhaust shop, have him cut the back 2 cats off (it will be a 4x4) have him weld straight pipes and put a true full dual exhaust on without messing up anything in the computer, is this correct? I know it will be "droney" i have an 95 impala ss right now with super 40 flowmasters and 0 cats. So i can do this correct?

Correct. Yes you can do that without affecting the computer. My Titan has been error free since the cat-delete.
However, having said that, A few Titan owners who replaced the set 2nd cats with straight pipes complained of "raspiness". Replacing the cats with straight flow bullet resos produced more mellow and deeper tones.
You also want a "removable reso section" so that you can put back the "cat sections" during inspection or when you want to trade in your vehicle.
Good Luck.
just cleaned my cats out the other day, mcuh better sound, louder too, allows for more resonance on the highway though... but i do have a super 40.... and i usually dont tend to belive this when other people say it, but i have DEFINATELY gained some mid-range power....
Catalytic converters (when warmed up, approx. 15 min) reduce the harmful benzenes emitted by the burning of unleaded gas. Benzenes are extremely carcinogenic.
When we switched away from lead gas, this was the compromise. Some health experts think it was a bad choice... hard to say if we ended up with the lesser of two evils.
Most people who consider disabling their cats for minor perf gains are putting peoples health at risk. Unfortunately they aren't riding behind themselves sucking up the cancer causing emissions.
If you do disable your cat, be a decent person, and sit yourself down behind your running truck for at least 30 minutes a day.
That way the problem might solve itself over time.
Dude we drive gas gusslers. Do you drive a Titan? Most people on here myself included could give a rats azz about what catalytic converters do. We buy these big trucks to tow things and smoke lesser vehicles.

where the hell did this guy come from? "sit behind a running vehicle for at least 30 mins a day" just for your information buddy, this thread is about the secondary cats that only exist on the 4wd's and are there for no "apparent" reason.... my actual catylitic converters are intact and unchanged....
Wow, just read five pages of this old thread and come to that guys talking about sitting behind my truck for 30 mins .
As stated these are gas drinking machines used for either towing, moving, racing and etc. Lets be honest, if we thought about the environment like that we would be on a hybrid forum and sure as hell would not have bought an 8 cyl p/u truck. For post like that, you can sit behind my truck for 30 min if you like and I will pay for the gas..........
If he had read the entire thread or knew anything about his own truck he'd have realized that the cats are still installed, they're attached to the manifolds. This mod is referring to the secondary cats or resonators.

I have an 06 XE 2WD. From what I understand, the cats closest to the Y pipe are actually just resonators, not cats? Am I correct? From what gather from this thread, I'll gain some power by replacing these with some high flow resonators. Also correct?
