Am I missing something? Exhaust $ question

I stopped by our local Midas dealer today, after all they are an 'authorized Flowmaster dealer.'

We talked about the different systems, sat at his PC to listen to different ones, 40, Delta 40, up to the 70.

He said they'd have several different ones in stock on Monday. They'd put one on the Titan, let me listen to it before welding, and if I don't like it they'll swap it with another one til I get the sound I like.

Price, you ask?

$189 parts & labor, give or take a few bucks depending on the series.

What am I doing wrong?

He did ask me if I wanted stainless steel, which would be more expensive, but thats price he quoted me for the standard Flowmaster series. I assumed he meant they were going to charge $189 for labor (!!) or something, but he said no, thats parts and labor when I asked him a second time.

At this price, what isn't included? Why is it so much less expensive than what I've read here on Titantalk?

Or do I just live in a great part of the county or something?

From the price you were quoted, it sounds like that is only the muffler installed and that's it. It will cost you a few bucks more for stainless and stainless steel tips. Depending on your setup, you may or may not need an X-pipe as well.

Yep, sounds like they are just planning on swapping in the muffler. That would be a reasonable price for that since the muffler alone is around $100.

Okay, what am I missing by having only the muffler installed? I'm going strictly for noise, really, as long as the perfomance of the engine doesn't drop TOO dramatically.

I'm not worried about what it looks like underneath, and as much of my Titan will be accessorized in black or charcoal I'm not worried about the "look" of stainless. Should I get the stainless because of rust or some other reason though?

Thanks for all the info.

If you are just looking for the sound, then that's really all you need. If you are looking for performance gains then you might consider running a new Y-pipe and 3" pipe for a single. Stainless' value is debatable, so I don't see it as worth it IMHO. However if you replace the tip(s) then I'd recommend stainless over chromed steel. Besides, stainless discolors when heated, so the "look" aspect is really pointless.

If you just want noise then do the muffler swap, if your going for looks as well as performance, then look at my above mention post. It's all a matter of what you want and what your hoping to accomplish.

Thanks for the info, you guys are great! I'm looking forward to Monday for sure, and will take a look at the Y-pipe / 3" single.

Thanks again!

Just ensure that they actually "bend" pipe and not just use the pre-bent accordion style crush bends that a lot of these large chains do.

Don't want to pile on the posts just to say thanks, but again thanks for the additional tip. I'll ask the dealer about it tomorrow and see if they do it and / or if it will change their quote.

I like the factory exhaust.
I think i'll wait till it corrodes, or if somthing goes wrong to change it.

This a good point. I'd say the chances of Midas have a mandrel bender are very slight.

I doubt they would either, but I'm saying that they should at least have a die pipe bender, most exhaust shops would. I was saying to avoid any place that uses the pre bent wrinkle bends.
