HP loss

I got a flowmaster super 40 (1 in 2 out) put on in january. From when i pulled out of the shop i noticed that i didn't have near as much power as i did with stock. From everything i've read, i'm suppose to gain power but it seems i lost it. Has anyone else had this problem??

I have a Banks... I thought i lost a little low end torque at first, but after about a week, i realized i gained dramatically everywhere. Let it setting down for a little bit. The exhaust should break in.

I had the Flowmaster 40, 3" in, dual 2.5 out. I did not have a loss of power, but I didn't have much gain. I replaced it with another system.

Exactly, and that something else would be a Volant or K&N cold air induction which would help get some of that low end back as well as give you an all around increase in power. At least several that have done the CAI, exhaust combo have had those results. Good luck.

I was thinking about that, i'll probably order the k&N and give that a shot and i might switch out my y-pipe for better flow

I've heard some claim 30 or so hp gain with just intake and exhaust. But I think that is with a full exhaust system.

A member here cut the stock y-pipe (can't remember who it was off hand) in half and you wouldn't believe how restrictive it is. There was a thread on it.

Here's one of my threads on HP and torque dyno gains after I replaced my intake and exhaust.

Even Better Volant Dyno Results

The pipe before the muffle might be too large. Mine gets installed tomorrow. The guy said go with a 2inch pipe because that is whats stock and will keep the back pressure about the same. Hes changing my y pipe though. He said only go with larger pipes if you plan on doing engine work. The 2 inch pipe with a better muffler and y pipe will give me more power he said. We'll see tomorrow I guess. I forget what size pipe he is using after the muffler. I'll find out.

Same here

I also had a flowmaster 40 series muffler put on my truck and I lost power. I've had it on for a year now and I definately think that just having a flowmaster muffler on the stock pipes kills your low end. Put a Volant cold air on my truck and it didn't help the low end, but I gained passing power on the highway. I also ordered a B&B exhaust, but I had to go back to Iraq before it arrived, so it will be there waiting for me when i get home.

I think it's safe to say to benefit completely, you have to go with at least a cat-back and CAI to notice the full potential. Changing out just the muffler and as you say even the CAI with it isn't doing much until you get rid of the stock, (y-pipe) restrictive exhaust. BTW, thanks for serving.
