Please do not contradict the experts who say that you will lose your low end by reducing the back pressure. You are confusing me.

Looks good bro! One of these days I will be able to meet you when you come to Houston for another get together.

Yea yea I know when you reduce back pressure your supposed to loose low end torque, but I dunno man, it may be an increase in throttle response but this thing really runs now

Back in my early days, I brought this up. I need to re-read the whole thing to remind myself of some stuff. I know my new exhaust that my friend & I made pretty much eliminated any major restrictions from the resos back and killed back pressure due to the scavenging effect. I can squeal my tires as easy now, if not easier, as when I had the factory exhaust which created a lot of back pressure.

yes in a sense.........we also replaced the whole pipe from the cat back to the cat with 3" piping instead of the stock 2.25"<--dunno if thats the exact size

The stock resonators are a double-walled pipe in places and it is 1.5" in diameter for about a 12" section of piping.

Ditto. In the early 80's, I once owned a European "Gray market" version of a Mercedes Benz. An identical US version was rated 25HP less than my car. The only difference was the exhaust: The European version did not have catalytic converters and resonators (and headlights). It was also quicker off the line (higher low end torque?).

With my present Titan set-up (cat delete + 2.5" true dual + Volant CAI), I feel the truck is quicker off the line too and I have "unofficially" timed a 15+ sec 1/4 mile. I'm headed to Atco (NJ) race track to make it official before the summer is over.

Anyway, can someone knowledgeable in internal combustion engines explain the technical principles why there is the belief that an unrestricted exhaust causes low end torque loss? Is this true or is it a myth?

Nice thread there HavockWK!! Thank You. Very informative and factual backed-up by numbers.

I knew there was some mathematical proof to disprove the "back pressure creates torque" myth. I guess this old myth was started by folks who really never understood the inner workings of the modern internal combustion engine and we've been sucked into it.

Pro drag racers completely discarded this "backpressure myth" by using open headers with their below 9 sec. funny cars!!!
