I just did some research without my questions fully being answered. I'm thinking about an intake to go with the Banks that I already have on. I don't want to pay the over $300.00 for the Volant so I'm thinking of going with the K&N 77 series.
1. What is the major difference between the K&N FIPK and the 77 Series? From the site I was looking at it mentioned that the 77 instantly gain up to 30 horsepower and 23 ft/lbs of torque. The FIPK increase up to 26 horsepower and torque gains of up to 23 ft/lbs.
2. Why is the FIPK over $300.00 while the 77 is $259.00? In other words, is the FIPK that much better even though the 77 increases the HP more?
3. Which out of the two would be a better combo with the Banks
4. How hard are these to install. The site says both are simple yet on Vector's thread he mentioned it was somewhat difficult to install.
5. Does anyone know of a site that sells these less than what I previously mentioned.
Sorry a head of time if this has been discuss on a previous thread and I missed it in my searched.
If it sounded like it was difficult to install, It was not. It would have been a very easy install if I did not choose to get a throttle body spacer. The throttle body spacer made things a little interesting, and caused fit issues with the K&N. But that was the TB spacers fault, by no means K&N's fault.
The FIPK has a steel shroud that blocks engine heat and keeps the cooler air that is coming through the fender boxed in similar to the Volant. I paid $220 for my K&N FIPK on eBay. You will also find the Volant out there starting at $210.00.
The K&N has a real deep throaty sound to it when you open the throttle up, but when crusin along it is almost factory quiet. It doesnt get on your nerves, but will place a Sh!t eating grin on your face every time you crack the throttle.
Personally I LOVE the K&N FIPK.
When searching on eBay, use key words K&N Titan or Volant Titan
That will get you the best results.

Did you need to reset anything after the install?
I've read on some threads you need to disconnect the battery for awhile. I didn't do this step after my Banks and it reset itself on it's own.
I also just checked out ebay, there is a FIPK for $229.00 + $15.00 for shipping.
You should disconnect the negative battery terminal any time you work on your titan from a mechanical perspective. Just keeps you from grounding yourself out under the hood. 800 cold cranking amps through a wedding ring is pretty neat. It glows red hot instantly, and when you pull back from the extreme burning sensation and only get a bone with tendons holding it in place, your kids will think that its the best Halloween trick they have ever seen. There will be no blood loss because it cauterizes the wound shut.
I actually was privileged enough to see the stunt mentioned above. Due to it I have never ever worn any type of jewelry while working on a car.
So I would recommend it just on principal.
But you should drive your Titan for about 20 miles afterwards at a normal pace just to the ECU can reset all of its parameters to your climate

My kids will have to wait for Halloween since it isn't for another 4 months, I'll skip the trick . Thanks for the tip... negative terminal will be disconnected!
The 77 series has the MAF upstream of the vent hoses whereas the FIPK has the MAF downstream of the vent hoses...They both have the heat shield and same installation. The FIPK has a plastic intake tube and the 77 has either chrome or gunmetal intake tube. As far as performance difference between the two....there probably is none...IMO go for the 77 its cheaper.
Vector, I'm curious, why did you go with the FIPK and not the 77? The 77 gives you more HP and cost less. So what was the incentive to go with the FIPK?
I spoke with a few people at K&N, they claimed the FIPK has a broader powerband. More torque than the 77 over more of the RPM range. The 77 was a little more peaky. (performing better at one particular RPM). So I picked the FIPK as I tow and wanted the one that they recommended as being the better powerband intake system.

I agree with what Captmrgn said. I had the FIPK on my 04 and have the 77 on my 05.
The 77 was much easier to install, although the FIPK wasn't hard. One of the main reasons the 77 was easier to install was that it had 10-15 fewer parts(screws, bolts, clamps etc). The heat shield was also easier to install on the 77. I didn't have to reach over the front tire to tighten a bolt to the fender well.
As far as performance goes, I could tell no difference.

If you go to the k&n website the dyno tests they performed show the 77 gaining 7 and some change hp and the fipk gaining 11 and some change hp. I was tring to decide which one to get myself.
i got the K&N 77 series off Ebay for $189+ $15 for shipping. very pleased with it. very easy to install, only took about 45 min.to an hour. i like the looks of the chrome tube, over the black plastic. the filter is HUGE, that has to be a good thing. i forget the guys name on ebay, but i got it in about a 9 days from the time i ordered it.
