Question ? Re: MAF Sensor & Modified Air Box

Early on I decided to go with the K&N drop in airfilter with the modification of removing most of the internal snorkel in the factory airbox. I understand to much oiling of the filter by either the factory or by ones own self can damage the Mass Airflow Sensor. My question is: does anyone here have any evidence of the modified airbox/sawing off the internal snorkel negatively affecting this sensor? I had 1 quick incident recently of a stall but started her back up with no other problems. I attributed this to a pocket of water in the gas but someone here suggested the MAF Sensor. If it were, the air filter has been in untouched and unoiled since new so I am wondering about the modificaton and any long term negative effects.

I cut off the portion of the snorkle inside the air box quite awhile back. No adverse affects, except for a little air noise, which to me sounds good. I run the factory Nissan filter.

I use the K&N drop in with the airbox mod. No problems at 19,000 miles. I've used K&N oiled gauze filters for many years on many different vehicles and have never had a MAF fouled or any other problem.

With our airbox design, I would think that MAF fouling would be pretty difficult. Since air comes up through the bottom of the filter and exits out of the top, this means that over-oiling would probably be resolved by gravity - the oil would drip down into the bottom of the airbox, not up in the airstream going to the MAF. Not to say you can't foul the MAF if you grossly over oil, but it seems unlikely.

BTW, full cleaning and reoiling should probably be necessary only every 50,000 miles or so.

dido, 13500 miles with drop in K&N filter with Air box mod, no issues, Have re-oiled once and did not have a problem, although I was very careful to apply the oil evenly and let the filter sit out over night.

I still can't bring myself to buy a CAI, a couple of hundred bucks for maybe 1-2 HP over what the airbox mod and drop-in filter does is not worth it to me....

Thanks for the feedback. I am about to reach 18,000 miles and feel confident the filter and modification had nothing to do with the one time stall, it had to be a little water pocket in the gas. I also liked the extra vroom sound when I originally did both mods and definitely got a bit more mpg and punch but I can't hear the vroom anymore since doing the Gibson cat back system.
