If you are looking to gain anything than yes there is a difference. If I remember correctly, the stock tubing is 2 1/8 to 2.25in at the opening of the y pipe and the Flow kit is 2.25 to a 3in y pipe with either a 3in or dual 2.25in outlets. I am not sure on those, I can't remember what thread the stock measurements were on. If you are just looking for the sound than you are completely right. If you are looking for performance you are not gaining much at all. However, I guess if you are really into serious performance and wanting to add high flow cats and headers down the road you would want to go with a larger diameter the whole way through like the Banks 3in all over. The flowmaster kit is kind of like the fencepost-sitter, it increases air flow slightly to increase horse but doesn't give up that much backpressure to save low end torque.
