Has anyone changed just the muffler and not the whole cat back?

I am thinking of just changing the muffler instead of the whole cat back system you see for sale at numerous sites. I looked and it would take a 2.5" offset inlet, and a 2.5" center outlet. The length of the stock muffler is 19" and the Flowmaster is 17". I spoke with a guy at Flowmaster tech today and he recommended a Delta 50 series suv muffler. Any thoughts on this cheaper method of upgading the exhaust? Thanks.

I just changed the stock muffler to the Flow Master 50 series ( not the SUV),
it makes great sound !! but has a bit of drone at 1600 rpm.
I wonder what is the difference between regular 50 series and 50 SUV ?? I know the SUV is bigger than the regular one,,,, that makes just different sound? or the performance better??

I had a Hooker Aero Chamber installed. It made the truck louder! Got me LOTS OF DRONE and no noticeable performance. Save the money and buy a CAT back system. I just ordered the Zoomer because the drone is driving me mad!

i ran a 15.026 on a magnaflow muffler, reso deletes, and an intake. I like the cat back systems, i have never pushed myself to buy one. I dont think i will on this vehicle ever, i just think the same gains can be had by welding in mandrel bends, and less restrictive muffler, thats all a cat back is any way.

MY FIRST MOD WAS TO HAVE INSTALLED A VORTEX MUFFLER, A CHEAPER VERSION OF FLOWMASTER. I FORGET THE SERIES #. THE SOUND IS GOOD, A SLIGHT DRONE WHEN ACCELERATING SLOWLY THROUGH ~45 MPH, BUT THAT IS RESONANT ONLY AND GOES AWAY ONCE THE GEAR SHIFTS OR YOU LET CRUISE TAKE OVER. I THINK, NOT PROVEN, IT INCREASED MY THROTTLE RESPONSE. I DO FEEL I INCREASED MPG, BUT THE SOUND IS NICE AND WORTH THE CHEAPER PRICE TAG. IT NOW HAS ~ 18k MILES ON IT AND THE CASING PAINT IS LONG GONE, BUT NO RUST. IF I WASN'T IMPATIENT OR HAD NOT JUST DROPPED 35k ON THE TRUCK THEN I WOULD HAVE PROBABLY WENT WITH SS DUAL EXHAUST, BUT THE PRICE WAS WELL ABOVE MY TOLERANCE FOR LOOKS -V- EQUAL PERFORMANCE. I ALSO HAD A BLACK CHROME TIP INSTALLED, IT FADED AND WAS NOT WORTH THE EXTRA $80.

IN SHORT. THE STOCK MUFFLER IS HUGE, AND THERE WAS A NOTICEABLE DIFFERENCE IN THE AFTERMARKET INSTALL. WHAT I DO REMEMBER IS THAT THE GUY TOLD ME THAT THE SOUND IS MUCH LESS THAN AN "AMERICAN THUNDER" SYSTEM. THE SOUND IS NICE, NOTICEABLE, AND NOT OVERWHELMING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS.

Put a Magnaflo cat back dual tip on myself with the strapes in the kit. Cab noise was loud (leaks), but was almost unbarable when pulling a travel trailer. Tried dynomating the entire cab including back wall and doors in addition to 9 cans of dupli-color undercoating under the cab (helped but still loud). Finally went to a muffer shop to change the muffler. The guy told me that he would fix the noise without the change. Ended up with custom bent pipes and very low noise (except with windows down) and he only charged me $75 to do it. Not to mention with all the dynomatting the stereo sounds much better.

i replaced mine with a series 50 flowmaster and added an 18" echo tip. took a trip to dallas an it was very loud and abnoxiuos. swaped it out for a dual chrome tip. still loud but not as resonant with cruise set at 70mph.doesn't vibrate everything in the truck.

Has anyone here swapped out the stock muffler for a 40 series Flowmaster? I did a Gibson cat back on the 04 Titan. It sounded nice but wished it was a little louder. Money is an issue now with the 05 crew cab. A reputable muffler shop with the mandrel bending machine gave me a price of about $500 for a cat back, flowmaster 50 series muffler then dual exhausts out with special tips. I think the price was good but again, I may just go with a new muffler and a tip. Any feedback on tips would be appreciated or a muffler/tip combo. loudtitan, with the risk of being rude, how much was your dual chrome tip and 50 series installed?

man, does anyone utilize the search button nowadays??

here's a post i made about a month ago, i'll just click and paste instead of posting the link...

this is just a muffler replacement with utilization of the stock pipes! added a 4" chrome angle cut tip to the end. it is a SI/SO 2.5" flowmaster 50suv series and in the pictures you can see the part # on the muffler itself.

Well as promised i am providing some cheesy pics and a short movie clip (quicktime) to show my newest and so far second favorite mod. i had the Flowmaster 50 SUV series installed today and all went well. of course this pretty much covers all you low-budget, bang for your buck kinda guys like myself. All i can say is DEEEEEPPP!!! it is a touch above mild with an extremely deep rumble that roars louder when the throttle is opened up!! i can say that it sounds much like an old school muscle car with a deep mellow rumble at idle. for those wondering, yes there is a very slight noticeable drone at around 1600-1900 rpms, unfortunately at cruising speed. so far i'm in love with it!! definitely turns the heads and grabs attention!! great thing about adding an exhaust to a Titan is not only does it bark but it bites like a rabid mongoose!! thanks to Dragonhead and Vshortt and Sammy Sandbag for the advice and info, and to anyone else i may have left off my thank you list... :smt006

here's the pics... sorry for the short video clip, but i promise some better ones!!!

Muffler

I bought a Gibson and kept the stock pipes until they need to be replaced and then I'll spend the $$ on stainless steel...

Sounds great to me, power that I notice.

Not a Banks, but don't NEED it at this time!

tortuga, thanks for the info. Nice set up and sound clip is great. I thought I detected a little "Yahoo!" scream prior to start up, lol. Do you or anyone else here know what is the real difference between your suv series 50, a regular series 50 and a series 40? I think I will copy your set up but need to know how much more radical one might be from the next.

Tex, here's a link to flowmaster with soundclips, although the soundclip of the 50suv series doesn't do it justice cause they put it on either a 4 or 6 cylinder engine... http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/sound.html

here's a link where you can read the differences between the different series'... http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/mufflers.html

the only difference really is the length of the muffler, which if longer the tuning chamber is longer and will quiet the exhaust more than a smaller muffler/tuning chamber...

i'll try to get some more soundclips posted! i really love the sound!!

Hey was the SUV muffler smaller in length? Did you have to make a slip on extension for the stock pipe to go to the muffler?
