Big tow vs. non big tow performance.

Being that the big tow package has shorter gearing do they tend to be quicker than the non big tow Titans in a straight line? I had the choice of either and didn't get the big tow being that I dont tow anything and I really didn't like the look of the huge tow mirrors but now knowing about the gearing I kinda wish I had gotten it. How do stock 1/4 mile times compare between the two in 2wd?

You will see very little difference between the two. The difference in 1/4 mile times are so small that reaction time of the driver is a much bigger factor.

I test drove both and thought the non tow package was gutless, it has no punch off the line. I dont tow but got the tow package for the gears and the stronger running gear.

I don't think there is whole lot of difference, but I owned an '04 XE KC 4x4 with no Big Tow or Off Road. I think it was quicker than my '05 LE CC 4x4 with Big Tow. It could have been the KC vs CC though. I know the '04 XE got better fuel economy and that may have been due to weight and taller gears.

WHAT!?!!? My truck doesn't have the big tow pkg, and it will shred the tires off the line. I wouldn't call it gutless.

How many miles did the non-tow truck have that you drove? These trucks have a pretty 'sensitive' computer and they adjust quickly to driving habits-maybe the truck you drove was either driven slowly, or not at all, but to say they're gutless...no way.

Not too mention, I'm sure my truck gets better gas mileage than one with a tow pkg. So, if you don't tow regularly, or havey lods, getting the big tow may not be worth it.

I just don't see the point of buying a truck and not getting the factory tow package. If you don't tow/haul anything or if you are concerned about how fast you can go then get a sports car.

If someone does tow, but hauls, why would they need the tow pkg-seems like a waste of money to me.

Being I don't tow much I was at first going to get a non-big tow truck, and I did not think I would like the big mirrors getting in the way. The dealer had a truck the color and options I wanted plus the extra big tow. I love the the mirrors, their are vertually no blind spots weather towing or not, and they make the truck look bigger, I did not test drive the non-big tow so I can't compare times, but mine is sure quick off the line. For $250 it is a nice option to have.

I find it interesting that some folks can shred their tires off the line and others, like me, barely get a popcorn fart squeal out of them. Not that I'm complaining or anything. My Titan is plenty quick for me, but from day one, it would never smoke the tires.

At some point, I may visit a track or something to see what my 0-60, 1/8 and 1/4 mile times are and how they compare to others here. I know there's a 5-10 HP difference between trucks out there. I may have one at the lower end of the spectrum.

I suppose my heavier, LE, CC, 4X4 could have something to do with it. Who knows.

Regards,

John

Well, maybe shred was the wrong word, but depending on the road surface, it'll leave probably a good 4 or 5 ft. tire mark, which is good for power, but bad for tires. And turning corners...WOW, it can go forever.
Heck, last week, I was just starting to go around a parked delivery truck on a two-lane road when a car suddenly appeared from over a hill. So I gunned it to get around-not thinking it would spin...SHEEEYIT!! The mark is still there to this day!

But, like you John, there are times when it seems to barely get off the line...who knows.

The big tow may have some slight benefit, but I doubt it's that much. The trick would true posi-traction, which I think somebody here was working on, can't remember who.

when I test drove both trucks, I "felt" BT was a slightly a little faster but not significant. I bought BT because of VDC and possible future towing especially with the help of these mirrors when driving.

I have the big tow and notice that the rear end squats during launch and it gets going quickly with the right conditions
I only have spun my tires turning right but then again, I don't want to peel them out all the time as I need them to last as long as possible

I'd say a race is in order. How about anyone willing to participate post their location and truck specs, and we'll try to match some people up.
