It definately won't fit inside the Volant box....the base is 8.5" and the Volant filter's base is 5.5" which puts it right at the top of the box already. Plus the i.d. of the AFE filter is 4 3/8"...the Volant is 3.5". You could maybe fit a 6" base filter with a larger top dia and extend the length by about an inch.

I think the difference in flow with the AFE is a combination of a better filter design (not necessarily size) and a better tube design...tapered to give better velocity. I'd bet if you replaced the Volant filter with a similar sized AFE, or even the Dry Flow filter from AEM, you'd see slightly better flows and probably better filtration.

Speaking of which Rocky, do you know if the Dry Flow filter from AEM would fit on the AFE? I just like the Idea of the no oil, but I like the AFE box better than the AEM, hence my problem.

I don't recall the dimensions of the Dry Flow, but I know the boot i.d. isn't going to be close to 4 3/8" like the AFE....probably more like 3.5".

Rockymtntitan did you get the high silicon while using the Volant or was it with the afe? Reason I am asking is because that is the Main reason that I dont already have a cai. I did order the Afe however it looks like a quality kit I am curious about the silicon though.

He had the high Silicon from the Volant. His AFE is 2-3 weeks old. You will be happy with the AFE.......I am.

No, I still haven't even ordered the pre-filter yet. I'll test it for sure, though.

Yeah, most of these kits will elevate your silicon somewhat, but I've seen several analysis come back from other members with acceptable levels while running the Volant or stock box with Air Hog drop-in. My oil sample with elevated silicon was with both the Air Hog and then the Volant installed...mostly with the Air Hog. Squid does more dirt road driving than me, and had normal levels at 7500 miles with the Air Hog installed...so go figure.

They rockymtn, I was thinking of the pre-filter myself just to be on the safe side. Seems like it woul dhave very minimal impact on airflow as per your info gleaned form AFE.

I can't seem to find a part number for it though, have you had any luck?

Can some tell me what a "pre-filter" is?

I used to race motocross, is it similar to "filter skins" that motocrossers would use in dusty conditions? It was basically a piece of nylon (not unlike what the ladies wear) that if you where racing/riding in dusty conditions you would put around your foam filter. They where disposable and could buy them by the 1/2 dozen or so.

I ordered the black prefilter and a recharge kit from Sparkplugs.com. Should see them any time, now. AFE's site had the wrong p/n's for the prefilters....here are the correct ones, thanks to Natasha from Sparkplugs.com.

These are incorrect:28-10091 (Gold)
28-10092 (Red)
28-10093 (Black)
28-10094 (Blue)

That's basically what it is, although not disposable. They are a heavier nylon material with an elastic band around one end. I'm hoping they will help keep the silicon levels lower on my oil samples. AFE states that they will only reduce air flow by 1%. I had one on my Tundra's K&N FIPK, although I usually left it off, unless going into the hills.
