Black Box tuning part II

I was able to be at Pro Auto Techs shop on friday and witnessed some programming on Ron's personnel truck. After about 27 pulls on the dyno and alot of programming he had some good #'s. He also flashed my box with the best tune and it made a big improvement over the original. Guys this is the real deal, you can check out the results on his web site.

What kind of gas do you have to use with the black box? Regular or Premium Gas?

Pretty impressive gain with AFE. Although I wonder how much the intake alone contributed to the numbers on the second run vs. the BBT? In other words, isn't it likely that you would see about a 9hp advantage with the intake alone? This, added to the first dyno run of 261 = 270 that you got in the second run. So basically the tuner is not giving you anything over and above the initial 14hp gain. I know what I'm trying to say, it just isn't coming out right lol....

Dyno 1 - 2005 Titan

This is a base run with no tuning or any other modifications against the custom tune of "The Black Box Tuner"

Base run: 247.58 HP / 307.36 Ft-Lbs

"The Black Box Tuner": 261.98 HP / 331.04 Ft-Lbs

Dyno 2 - 2005 Titan

This is a base run with no tuning or any other modifications against and AFE airbox and the custom tune of "The Black Box Tuner"

Base run: 247.58 HP / 307.36 Ft-Lbs

AFE / "The Black Box Tuner": 270.61 HP / 335.73 Ft-Lbs

Well I'm not sure I am buying yet...I've seen stock dynos running about the same as the black box dyno. Most Titans stock are throwing down 260 hp to the wheels. I've seen them throw down 280 to the wheels after exhaust and intake.

Ya sub 250 seems low for stock.
I know our Headers and Exhaust stock Intake box yelds about 303-305whp at least mine did.

You guys need to remember from the other thread, that what started this whole black box thing for a Titan, was because the guy's Titan was running very rich...like 10 or 11:1 afr. So if this was the truck they used for the base dyno numbers, then it very well could've dynoed at less that 250 hp. My truck dynoed at 253 stock. Most Titans see afr's around 13:1 under WOT when stock, but for some reason, there are some that are running very rich from the factory. After adding intake/exh/ and especially headers, some afr's have gone richer, mine included...although not too bad at 12:1. This is where a black box, piggyback ecu or programmer can help.

I've installed my Black Box I received after Ron finished the tuning on the Titan with the AFE and Flowmaster exhaust mentioned on his website. He used data from this truck as well as data I had logged on my truck (afr's, fuel trims, MAF voltages, etc) to determine the mapping for my box.

Seat of the pants, tells me the truck is more responsive and possibly has gained a few ponies....but can't say for sure w/o dyno and afr data. Since it may take a few reflashes to get performance at it's best, I don't want to dyno each time I need to see my gains and afr's (too much $$!), so I'm waiting to get my own wideband afr setup installed to gauge improvements. Wideband kits aren't exactly cheap, but worth it to me.

I have done a couple of WOT runs with and w/o the box wired in to compare data with my scan tool. The box definately has leaned things out...but hopefully not too much. The reason I know this, is that my fuel trims have shifted pretty dramatically to the + side, which means the injectors are adding fuel to compensate for a leaner afr. Without the box, they shift back to very neg readings....like -17%. Also, you can look at the MAF data being sent to the ecu. Without the box, my MAF reads 30-31 lbs/min at WOT, with the box, it now reads only 22 lbs/min. This is the what the box does for you...it remaps the voltage output so that the ecm is fooled into thinking you're flowing less air, thus forcing a leaner fuel map to be used. Of course, if your afr data shows you running lean, the box would be mapped to allow the injectors to open slightly longer to richen the mixture. I also noticed that just as Ron claims, I gained a couple more degrees of timing advance under WOT.

This box will not gain you a certain percent power gain across the board, like an intake, exh, etc....so you shouldn't think of it as a typical mod. Basically, if your truck is running rich or lean (esp under WOT) either stock or after adding intake/exhaust mods, then this black box that Ron has developed will work for you. The further your truck's afr is from ideal (12.5:1 to 13:1) the more power you'll be able to unleash with the black box.

I'll report more info after I get my wideband kit. Once I get the box flashed for ideal afr, then I'll make another trip to the dyno.

We have yet to Dyno a Titan with 12.8- 13.0 a/f ratio. We have done 10 so far
all were rich- That why we designed the tuning black box

Yeah mine ran 10.5 stock i think on your dyno Ron.

Ron is putting in my black box in the morning and I will have dyno numbers for the board hopefully by afternoon or evening. Looking forward to seeing what this thing will do.

On a related note, Nissan (Gettle Nissan in Sarasota) says that there is nothing wrong with my truck because it hasn't thrown a code even when I show them the A/F sheets from my dyno runs. If you are in this area I would avoid doing any business with them as they flat out refuse to do anything to help this problem. The service manager has treated me like sh*t, and I am of the opinion that the customer is always right or should at the very least always be pleased with the service. I'm sorry for the rant, but she really got under my skin today...

Re: Black Box tuning part II

they may not be able to adjust fuel/air ratio's, I don't think my dealer has computer manipulating abilities. If they did, I'd remove ABLS and speed limiter optimize air/fuel and a few other things

I'm sure they probably don't understand much of this either. My dealerships *head* mechanic makes $11 an hour! another who does ALOT of their work gets $7... second guy gets less than a standard wal-mart/Lowes or Home Depot employee, the 1st too I believe. My buddies cousin is the mech, he told us straight faced about the pay. and after seeing what he drives and lives with parents I believe it. unless his bank account is maxing 6 figures plus and for a 22year old I doubt it lol.

Re: Black Box tuning part II

Ron, You are a titan master...

I got 18 mpg coming home from your shop on I-75 doing 75 to 80 mph. My best before at that speed would be about 15mpg. I filled up here and will post city mpg when i get to run around a little. Just wanted to say thanks and I will start another thread to post all my data on to show how good this black box really is. That low end horsepower is incredible!!!

Re: Black Box tuning part II

You are welcome Iam happy for the MPG improvements- All of the Titans
i have linked too and dyno tested have been on the rich side?? LongTerm
Fuel trims always negative and wot Power Enrichment tables pig rich.
We try to get the Long Term Fuel Trims as close to perfect at 0.0 Percent
and the Air/fuel where it makes the most torque and power. Are you paying
attention UNIchip HA HA!

I'm here in CT and I'm wondering how I can get a dyno tuned black box from you without going to FL.

What are my options?

Might have to try and convince the MRS. to take a trip to FL sometime soon.
Is this something that can be done after I drop her off at the Mall?
