The dana 44 style uses shims to adjust the back-lash ,, by shimming from side to side you get your adjustment,,, usually most mechanics will put the diff back together with the factory shims and then check the back-lash and the contact pattern,,, and if needed they reshim as needed to get to proper specs........

What I do is to check the backlash in the gearset BEFORE pulling it apart, then do as above, shim to the backlash number you recorded, and check the pattern...this almost always works out fine.

I'm going to go with Dynatrac building me a Dana 60 and install an ARB air locker. Should be fun at the track with the rear end locked up and a set of drag radials on.

loufish has it right. Spend the extra minute and check before tearing it apart.

According to the service manual, the Titan rear differential does not use shims to adjust the carrier bearing. It uses threaded adjusters that require the use of a special tool to adjust through the axle housing tubes (ala Chrysler rear axles). There are no factory shims for the carrier bearings. The service manual does not illustrate the adjusters in detail. Thus, I do not know whether or not the standard Chrysler carrier bearing spanner tool will work. If your mechanic is expecting to shim the carrier bearings to adjust ring gear lash in the Titan's rear differential, perhaps you should direct his attention to the service manual, section RFD "Rear Final Drive".

Those were links to the head's differential dissection party. They were working, but they seem to have taken down the photos. Unfortunately, I didn't DL the pictures, but I pretty much have them memorized. And of course you could always take some pictures.

Yup, that will work with 4x2. I think Austin is investigating whether anybody can match gears front & rear so he can go to a Dana 60 in the rear w/o a front solid axle swap for 4x4. Or maybe he will be happy for the time being with the new Nissan rear axle?

Yes, good advice. The thing I was worrying about was that it would be necessary to back off the threaded carrier bearing adjusters (doesn't use shims) to get the original carrier out of the diff housing. And that it would then be a pain in the neck (requires special tool inserted through axle housing tube) to get everything back to the original lash after installing the truetrac.

Yes, upon reviewing the servicing manual, section RFD, page 13 states that you have to use Nissan Tool ST-354-1003 to remove the adjusters before removing the carrier. Perhaps the standard Chrysler axle tool will work for this?.

Good concept, but I couldn't find it by searching the number or by looking at the tools in the differential & axle category.
