oil vs non oiled cai

Why do most cai's require oil to sprayed on to the filter? Is there an advantage to doing this? I know the aem brute is non oiled and the others require it. I've heard people screwing up maf's because of too much oil. I'm leaning toward the volant g3 becaude albquerque is real dusty and I think I'd be better off with a sealed box, but I'd like to know exactly why these things need to be oiled up. Any thoughts on this? Thanks

Re: oil vs non oiled cai

A non-oiled filter will give you better protection against dust. I won't run a oiled filter on my vehicles again.

Re: oil vs non oiled cai

The theory behind oiled filter is the oil itself will catch the very fine particles. AEM new dryflow filter is supposed to do the same without the oil. This is my main reason for going with AEM. I have heard that Nissan MAF is prone to get foul from oil.

Re: oil vs non oiled cai

The Volant's closed box doesn't make a difference with dust. The same dust will make it's way into the intake of the box.

Only some CAI oiled filter mess with the MAF.

My aFe Stage II Intake has a oiled filter and I have had zero problems with the MAF. No lights.....

I believe that most of the problems come when the filter is cleaned and re-oiled for the first time. Often times, they are over oiled, hence messing up the MAF.

Re: oil vs non oiled cai

You can use the new DRY FLOW FILTER from AEM on the VOLANT CAI.I dont know about the 3rd generation of the VOLANT but I put an AEM dry flow on my 2nd gen.It is a tight fit because it is an extra 1" longer than the Volant filter, but it will fit with a little persuation.

Re: oil vs non oiled cai

I've had a couple of friends screw up their MAFs with oiled filters. Specifically, K&N. I have heard that the K&Ns are fairly heavily oiled out of the box. I stayed away from doing a new intake because of this - UNTIL AEM came out with the dryflow. Installed it and it is freakin' sweet.

Re: oil vs non oiled cai

If you don't want an oiled filter, KN makes a slip that you can put over the element to trap dust. It is sort of a sleeve and it is easily removed so you can wash it. From the pictures that I have seen, the AEM and the KN have a similar shaped element, so you probably will be able to put the KN on the AEM. The other option is just to clean the AEM more often with the provided cleaning solution.

Re: oil vs non oiled cai

I have the KNN and I never had a problem. I just clean and re-oiled it but DID NOT over oil it. I also think that is why the MAF gets jacked up. I will let ya'll no if I have any problems.

Re: oil vs non oiled cai

I won't run one of these, they're hard to get right.

Too little oil and you'll have the top end of your engine blasted by the dirt that gets through. This shows up on oil analysis as elevated Si.

Too much and you foul the sensors.

Why doesn't anyone make big paper cone filters?

Re: oil vs non oiled cai

I'd rather just rig something up to use a big Baldwin or Donaldson and throw the thing away when it's done.

Re: oil vs non oiled cai

Brons, I'd highly suggest looking into the AEM. I've had mine for a little while and it is great. Sounds great and performance is awesome (especially if you've upgraded your exhaust!). No worries about oil fouling the MAF, or under oiling and screwing up the engine.

Re: oil vs non oiled cai

I'd have to see some oil analysis results before showing that it didn't increase Si numbers and top end wear.

Re: oil vs non oiled cai

I will be needing some independent 3rd party data first...right now I am running the Wix which is probably more restrictive than stock. Filtration is my #1 priority, not performance. You guys probably aren't going to be able to talk me into it...sorry, I am just a skeptic.
