Finished the wiring up this morning. All went according to plan.
I now have two switches. One is the factory Diff Lock Switch. The second is the Mod Switch.
With the Mod Switch off, the Factory switch functions as it did from the factory. When in 4Lo, it actually locks the diff and turns off ABS. When in either 4Hi or 2Hi, it just sits there flashing the Diff Lock light at you as to say, Duh.. you aren't in 4Lo.
With the Mod Switch on, the Factory switch functions as it should after the mod. When in 4Lo, 4Hi, or 2Hi, it actually locks the diff without turning off the ABS. The Diff Lock light just comes on and stays on.
The cool thing is that I can hide this switch anywhere and it doesn't have to be super accessable. I am sure I'll leave the Mod Switch off for normal everyday use as I'd hate to lock the diff in at say 75mph when a candy bar or package of Kleenex gets bumped into the Factory Diff Lock Switch. I can flip it on when needed and then use the factory switch to actually control the locker.
Love it. Still has the "Stock" look and no one will ask..."What's this switch do?"
I'll spend a few days looking around and trying to decide where to mount the "Mini" toggle switch. I currently have a standard rocker switch mounted under the dash - solid but not perminent.
I also took pics. Once I get them sized down so I can post them, I'll post them.
Shall we call this the AUSTIN/robert Mod? or just the Austin with a Twist mod? lol
Austin's page has all the details on the mod he did - which in turn was the beginning of mine. The difference between the two is that instead of a DPDT relay, I used a QPDT relay. The extra two poles were used to modify the output of the factory Lock switch so it would control the new relay.
There could be many reasons, such as drag racing! You could also need a bit of extra traction when on a dirt road, etc.
