Reso deleted by punch out???

I have seen and read about cats. being puncehd out or replaced by straight pipe or other aftermarket resonators. My question is has anyone just punch out (or clean out the inside of the resonator)? I read where GR8Titan say after the fact that he could have punch out the cats instead of spending money on the resonators. Thanks.

well that wouldn't help for a number of reason's, a resenator is just a strait pipe with holes in it within chamber part of it to reduce the resenating frequences. So there is nothing to "punch out" so to speak, also the resenators at the smallest part are like 2" so that is very very restrictive and thus a 3" pipe will solve all the issues

Thanks, look like I'll go the aftermarket bigger reso route.

As stated above by Titano24s, the resonators in the 4x2 (instead of cats of the 4x4) cannot be "punched out" because they are like small straight flow mufflers without any absorbent material. The resonators' narrowest point cannot be corrected by "punching it out".

However, in the case of the 4x4, the secondary catalytic converter can be "punched out" because the honeycomb catalyst material is located at the "widest" portion of the cat section. In this case, "punching it out" makes sense.

Re: Reso deleted by punch out???

If punching out the cats acts the same way as a straight pipe, you might just consider getting some resos. I installed straight pipes, and man, the drone is not cool. I ordered some Dynomax resos and two Zommer tips. The drone is that bad!

An what do you expect you will get from the reso's replacement?

Hopefully a little more air flow, from what I've read the reso's inlet/outlet is only like 2.5 in. While the Banks is 3 in piping. Only thing holding me back as of now is I'm afraid I might get that drone back.

So why stop there? Then you will have to get new headers... and on and on

I don't think this will affect the drone as I believe the drone is determined by factors relating to the portion from the end of the muffler to the end of the tail pipe.

Actually, the exhaust system is ONLY as efficient as the narrowest portion of the system.

Meaning: you could put a 3" monster cat back system but do not expect them to flow like 3" if the OE resos are still there (about 1.75" at it's narrowest point). The exhaust flow will continue to be restricted by the narrowest point of the entire system. And/or vice-versa: You could install a set of expensive headers but if the Y-pipe and reso/cats are there to continue restrict the flow, you are not getting the full benefit of the new headers. You might just as well leave the OE high flow exhaust manifold.
So when you plan the exhaust, make the mods worth while that all the parts work together towards a common goal.

Re: Reso deleted by punch out???

Is there a thread on this cat punch out procedure? Would it require removal of the cat, or just disconect the y pipe punch out and suck out material? What about sensor codes? Learn me please.

From what I've heard since the cat is down stream of the second O2 sensor it does not affect it.

Re: Reso deleted by punch out???

Thanks, did some research and it looks like it might be best to take it off before punching it out. Has anyone actually done this and run it on the truck. The thread I found the guy (name?) did it after installing high flow reso's.

Re: Reso deleted by punch out???

I have a 2004 SE Titan KC 4x4 w/ offroad package, tow package. From all the threads i have read I assumed I had 4 Cats on my truck and all 2x4 had 2 cats with 2 resonators.

I looked under my truck yesterday and was surprised to find I have 2 cats and 2 resonators on my stock 4x4 truck.

Is this rare and I should consider myself lucky? Yes, I am absolutely positive they are resonators and not a seconds set of cats. I even looked up a thread gr8titan had posted a while back that showed him comparing his new resonators next to his stock. They are definately resonators.

I live and bought my truck in Ohio. Is it a situation like the z28 camaros where as west coast production cars had 4 cats and the east coast had 2?

Does anyone else out there have a 4x4 titan se with the offroad package, tow package, ect and have only two cats and 2 resonators?

Any feedback would be appreciated.
