Has anyone converted from a 2.94 rear to a 3.36 yet?
All,
I have a 2.94/No Big-Tow…..I’m trying to go 3.36 for better performance anyone try this yet? Do you think I could find a junk yard 3.36 and simply change the ring and pinion? I would like to have this figured out before the Dertit Trutrac gets here..lol. That way i could get my gear man to do it all in 1 pop.
Do you think it would be a good move in terms of performance? Nissan tells me I currently have the equiv of 3.73 on a 4 speed...
Any help or leads would be greatly appreciated...
Thanks,

You may have issues with your ECU. Most guys today will want to adjust the shift points with the ECU, you will also need to find out if the Titan is using a gear and the ECU for the speedo or just the ECU. Your going to need to have that adjusted after a gear swap. The issue here is that we do not have a tunner available for us to make those changes.

Wow...sounds like I should just see how much the Detroit Trurac helps 1st. Nissan says i have the equiv of 3.73 on a 4 speed....shoot they put 3.73's in a stock Ford Lightning. http://www.musclemustangfastfords.co.../0403mm_shoot/

Re: Has anyone converted from a 2.94 rear to a 3.36 yet?
Ford has the same diff. in the f-150 as the mustang, and has always had a large aftermarket as well as factory offering of ratios.
Finding one in a junkyard would be difficult as the titan is so new. You shouldnt have any problems at all, other than your speedo not being completly accurate, but thats no big deal and can be fixed. Just find out how nissan does it on the lower geared trucks. I dont know how the titans speedo works, but if its a cable, its a simple gear change on the tranny end of the cable.
You will see slight gains in your off the line performance with the penalty of worse gas mileage on the highway. Since the ratios are close together, i would say its not even worth it. You have to make a bigger jump to have a real nice noticeable difference.

One of the 6 guys at work had their diffrential changed from the standard unit < 2004 xe non big tow> to the new 2005 finned big tow rear end. I was given the impression they thought it might have an issue and he had good connections at the dealer. He has 70k plus on the truck , but he was impressed with the difference in acceleration. He didn't mention any issues with the ecu or the anti slip function that is in the big tow.

Nissan has seperate ECU's for big tow vs non BT, IIRC. What is different, I do not know. I would think they might have different shift points for each, as well as the speedo/trip/odo calibrations.

You are the man i been lookin for.
Why did your buddy change, warranty work on diff failure? I would like 2 know any details on how he pulled this off....
Re: Has anyone converted from a 2.94 rear to a 3.36 yet?
I changed from a 32in tire to a 29 in tire. I though it may change the shift points but it did not. Still shifts around 6000rpm. So the shift points are not speed related like I thought. That's unless the change is small enough to not notice. I know the tire heigth change is = to a gear change from 2.93 to 3.20.

Thanks,
Mark,
The 3.3 "big tow" has a different Engine and A/T software. I wouldn't make the change unless you can get your dealership to re-flash BOTH. The truck will most likely drive, but it won't be right.
The 2.9 equals the 3.73 and the 3.3 equals a 4.1 in a 4 speed A/T like the F150 or Silverado have. I'm surprised the dealer knew that!

Hmm..who could re-flash??? I hear the 3.36's "feel" quicker???... I've spent a lil bit of money on mods...and frankly 2date headers are the only mod I can really "FEEL".....seems like a good mod ..just a little work???

By the way swapping ECU's you'll need new key fobs as a security measure and therefor a used ECU will not plug in play...So I have been told. Dealer can reprogram for you but you cannot have two ECUs with that operate with the same key fob. Yeah been doing some research...

I wonder if they could just reprogram mine after i find a way 2 change ring and pinion? Are you trying to do the same thing?

Yes. Thinking about it as I have access to a used 3.36 gear set. Waiting to see if the ECU thing is true as I have one in route today no key fob. IT may not be neccessary to switch gears after the TrueTrac appears in about 50 days.
