Hey Guys, brand new 06 Titan owner here and I am shopping around for an aftermarket exhaust. I spoke with a friend of mine the other day who knows alot about trucks and mods and he said that I could be getting myself into some trouble running true dual exhaust. I was looking to put in two Flowmaster 50 HD series mufflers and running it straight out the back with stainless tips (I got a quote for around $500 installed by a local muffler shop). My buddy was saying that since we have an OSBD or something like that (what is that?) that if I ran true dual exhaust that I would have an engine check light and if not he swore I would have maintenance issues with the truck in about a year or two, he also said I would lose alot of backpressure that is needed to keep that low end torque and I would not notice alot of performance change, I would however love the sound of it. I am just going of my buddy's advice (who has a chevy s-10) and I want some other TITAN input. Could someone please help me out, my tax return should be here next week and if I am getting exhaust, I wanna get it soon.
Thanks in advance for the help and advice.
Patrick

OBD II (On Board DIagnostic) most 96 and newer have this system, some 95 will have it too. Have not heard of anyone running true dual have check enginge light come on yet. Goodluck.

Listen, just swap the muffler, no loss of back pressure and much better sound. Plenty of sound clips here on just muffler swaps. Personally, I went with the flowmaster 70 series, #52571 and love it. $111 for the muffler and $50-$70 for installation.
But if I just swap out the muffler, then all I am doing this for is the sound, I was looking to do this so that I could get a little more performance and get the sound. I don't realy just want to swap out the muffler, I want to have true dual exhaust.

The engineers that designed the stock exhaust system didn't leave much on the table, so to speak....there's not a whole lot to be gained from an exhaust system replacement....some, but not alot.

i wanted to do same took to performance shop and they told me samething so settled on gibson dual cat back.
I have done alot of research as to what system I want and all the dyno graphs i have seen with only exhaust the single exit Magnaflow has best numbers. that is without replacing the Y pipe. The 5.6 likes back pressure. That is from dyno sheets at manufacuter's web sites as well as anohter source

Re: My exhuast dilemma!!! Help me please???
Here's what I did, and you can determine what you'd like to do from my results. I have an '04, and being an old hot-rodder, I took it to my favorite exhaust guy. We put the truck on the lift and had about a half hour discussion as to what to do. Here's our logic.
TRUE Duals won't work well because of the crazy line the left exhaust has to take to get out the back. You need at least an x-pipe to make it work right. And then the left side won't be doing much, again because of the convoluted path it has to take.
Over-under duals are kind of a waste of money because you can do the same thing with one larger pipe nowadays, especially with good stainless steel pipe and such.
So we settled on a Flowmaster 50, with a dual-in, single-out arrangement. We have 2 1/2" in, and 3" out, following the original pipe's bends. When you look at it, really, Nissan did a good job of figuring out where all the bends had to go so that the pipe wouldn't rattle against stuff. Also my big thing was to hide the better exhaust so that the truck wouldn't appear to be modded. This also keeps the local constabulary looking the other way... Yes! I AM an old-fashioned hotrodder!
What the end result give me is a slightly louder sound in the cab around 1800 RPM, but not so loud that my wife objects. AND it gives me a much quicker jump at low RPM without sacrificing the top-end pulling power.
I tow a 7000# trailer and am VERY pleased with the results. The truck stays cooler, the engine isn't working as hard, and it's even more of a blast to drive around town and on our old winding country roads.
Hope this helps.

Like you I was debating as to what exhaust system to get and with some assistance from a member on TitanTalk, I decided on a true dual exhaust system. Took the truck to a performance muffler shop and from the cats back, I have dual 2.25" exhaust piping going through an X-pipe into two Magnaflow XL mufflers and 2.25" tail pipes exiting through two SS Magnaflow tips (3" outlet). The tips are exiting out one on each side of the truck (I was advised against having the exhaust pipes exiting out the back of the truck). The shop did an excellent job in the bending of the piping. Now I have a truck that sounds like a very mean beast when you start it up and when you nail the gas - otherwise it's not much louder than stock. With this system and using 90 octane gas, I find the Titan has more low end torque than stock. That's my opinion.

i have done some exhaust changes on my titan and found that the best performance exhaust must be complemented by an intake system. the closer you bring the merge collector to the manifolds the more power it makes . i have used flowmaster magnaflow bullit . more air out needs more air in

You can run true dual...just don't touch the restrictive resonators...will not void your warranty

I did some research as well, and went with the single exit Magnaflow from the muffler replacement only standpoint. Total out at $140, installation included.
These guys do a lot of performance work- we went over the flowmaster, borla, etc. And what could fit in my budget for the sound/performance I wanted.
We talked about CAI systems and how to tweak the performance out of a Titan.
Got the Magnaflow added on Monday. Sounds GRRRRRRREAT!!
