Everyone chime in who did the Snorkel air box cut.
I'm itching to try this mod, so those of you who cut the snorkel shorter inside the stock airbox, please make some comments, since most of you did it a long time ago. Any low end loss, better mpg, regrets, etc. Would you do it again? Thanks.

Re: Everyone chime in who did the Snorkel air box cut.
i have no idea in gain or loss but it did add to the sound at wide open throttle (WOT).
As argued before, it doesn't increase performance IMO because it didn't increase air density inside the stock box but it did increase filter effeciency because it now uses more overall space compared to before.

that is what i am talking about. I did the the mod and installed a K&n drop in filter and have been happy with the results. Next mod is an exhaust.

I also did the chop job and from my buttocksdyno I think it did add a bit of acceleration, but I also did a magnaflow muffler along with it. Like the other guy said, when you get on it, everyone notices, dodges pee their radiators, chevys back off and fords just sit there and look dumb.

Did the k and n filter actually accomplish anything as far as mpg and acceleration is concerned? Would it be better to go with one of them thar fancy dancy super duper intake systems or is that a waste of time and money if you are wanting mpg's to increase?
Re: Everyone chime in who did the Snorkel air box cut.
I did the airbox mod primarily to center the air flow under the middle of the air filter rather than all the way over on one side as the stock box does. I think that does increase the likelihood that maximum flow will be directed straight up to the intake.
Frankly, I am noise sensitive. That is why I still have a stock exhaust and do not put on my K&N Aircharger very often. Having said that, I do not think there is any significant increase in noise after this mod, not even at WOT, but that is just my impression. I did not measure decibel level inside the truck before and after (although I have a sound level meter).
What I did do, however, is use my G-Tech accelerometer to measure power output. However, I did the airbox mod at the same time that I added a K&N drop in filter. I did the before testing (three runs and averaged them) totally stock and the after (both the airbox mod and the K&N drop-in - also three average runs), and saw a total gain on average of only two horsepower. However this gain was consistent.
There was usually more than a two horsepower difference between runs with the same setup, but the combo of airbox mod and the K&N drop in, always produced a slight gain in comparison.
What I can't say is how much of this modest gain was due to the filter and how much was due to the mod. I'd have to put the stock filter back in and test again. I don't think I threw the stock filter away, but I'm not sure where in the hell I put the thing!
Bottom line: it makes sense to do the mod, but don't expect a lot from it.

Well I'm probably going to cut the inside snorkel tonight. I'm going to use a heated knife like that one guy did, no shavings and clean cut. I will stay with the stock paper filter for now.

As for the K&N drop in filter I could not notice a differance but when I did the air box mod I could feel it right away.As for the mpg now with the mods I drive it harder so my mpg went down

Not only did I remove the snorkle, I cut the whole bottom half of the box off, and installed some PVC pipe and dryer vent ducting into the bottom side of the filter....sounds really cool, but I wouldn't do it again....stuff like this happens when my medication wears off.
