It helps the internal computer learn your new mod and should get better results quicker. I have read that if you don't do this it might take something like 300 mile for it to figure it out. Here's a sticky in the FAQ section on how to do it....good luck

So how did the install go? Pretty straight forward? Did you remove the front tire? I'm planning to do this too.

AEM includes very straight forward installation instructions. Very clear. You probally could do it w/o taking the tire off but much easier when you do.
