Re: over oiled filter on aFe....

...yes your fine

Here are some cleaning and oiling tips just FYI:

Cleaning:

Don't bother with the AFE cleaner spray use Simple Green in a 1:15 ratio with water. You want the solution to have a slight green haze. Place your filter in the bucket and let it soak. Gently aggetate the filter up and down in the solution every so often. This will get all the grime out and not damage the pleats. Let the filter air dry thoroughly...don't use any kind of compressed air or you will damage the pleats.

Oiling:

Use the AFE spray oil and spray up and down along the pleats around the filter from the OUTSIDE only. Keep spraying light coats until it starts to soak through the other side. Hold the filter up to a bright light and you will be able to see if the oil is applied evenly. Let it sit overnight and your ready to install.

Re: over oiled filter on aFe....

Once My K&N clogs I'm switching to a dry filter.

Always best to err on the side of too little oil if you ask me... most people over oil.

Re: over oiled filter on aFe....

You can also just re-wash it to get all the extra oil off, then relube it with less oil.

Re: over oiled filter on aFe....

I had the squeeze bottle not spray, so if I were to get the spray I'm sure it'd of been no problem

I read the directions sifted it a little in a bucket of the cleaning solutions. then squirted it down with oil holding to the light to see where it was still white and oiled there as well it's now been sitting for a few days and the filter is still wet looking but no oil leaking, may just wash again with simple green and order more aFe oil in the spray bottle if it's still on sale.

Thanks guys,

T

Re: over oiled filter on aFe....

I barely oil my K-N anymore....my oil probably gets a little more dirty because of it but heck, it gets changed often enough.

your local speed shop should have the K&N filter cleaning kit.

and a paper filter is the way to go. None of these hassles required.

Re: over oiled filter on aFe....

I actually used a K&N cleaning/oil kit from a local shop lol. want to get the real aFe cause I like it blue...

no doubt on the paper filters, I'd prefer the AEM dryflow and was considering it but got the aFe in the 1st group buy last year I think it was around october... $295 shipped to HI, can't beat that for a sick intake I'd like to see some knock offs on ebay so I can get a metal tube. I want to try something like the TB coolant tank with the intake pre MAF hoping to up hp I could loop it in and out from the intake box to the TB and wrap it in intake insulation... wonder if it'd be worth the gain, better ask Thrust to run his TB coolant tank though the intake also by wrapping copper or plastic flexable plumbing line around it like a string on a fishing reel

well, finishing some sub boxes with glassed bottums, be back with pix on those later this week I hope...

Re: over oiled filter on aFe....

Who is putting enough miles on a K&N or other oiled gauze filter to need to clean and oil them so frequently?

You only need to do it once every 50,000 miles. They flow so well they can get really, really dirty looking and still flow more than the intake can use.

I've used K&N's on a lot of vehicles for a very long time. People tend to clean and oil them way too often. The K&N on my CJ5 Jeep is a good example of what I am talking about -- it's been on there over ten years! It goes off-roading a lot, dirt, dust and mud. I've cleaned it only twice in that time.

The K&N drop-in I had in my Expedition (a '97 model I sold to purchase my Armada) was cleaned only once in the 107,000 miles I drove it.

These type filters don't have the same change cycle of paper.

At least that has been my experience.
