Re: Improved performance and hp from 2 degree timing advance?

The site for the Cipher software also indicated about 5-6 HP increase (dyno runs) with the 2 degree advance.

Re: Improved performance and hp from 2 degree timing advance?

I plan on getting mine done next Saturday at the NJ meet.

Some have said they've noticed an increase in performance, some not. If I can get it done for free, I'll give it a try. I also plan on adding a TBS, so I won't be able to evaluate it alone.

Re: Improved performance and hp from 2 degree timing advance?

You will probably get more gains from a CAI - Volant or AEM instead of that TBS.

I think the peole that noticed better gains from the timing advance were probably people that that had their timing off a bit.

Re: Improved performance and hp from 2 degree timing advance?

5 hp is nice. what about these concerns of it resettign to a stock base timing anyway, like when it pings or you remove power from ecu. is this a concern?

Re: Improved performance and hp from 2 degree timing advance?

No concerns about timing re-setting, unless someone reprograms it lower.

There is some confusion here regarding timing issues. When the knock sensor retards timing it does not change the base initial advance. The timing on the Titan is constantly changing depending on load conditions. The purpose of the knock sensor is to pull timing back when it "hears" the slightest ping or detonation (we will not hear this).

The person I know that did the advance timing was/is a Nissan tech, and had no issues with his timing.

I remember someone saying advancing the timing allows the truck to make up for all the electrical components it's running-if I said that right. Other have said it helps with the hesitation issue under WOT from a stop.
So, if I can help my truck by doing it, then I'm going for it!!!

Do I expect to break in to 14's because of it-NO. But what can it hurt at this point.

Hey Sobe, that 5 hp gain was on 87 octane or 91?

Re: Improved performance and hp from 2 degree timing advance?

if your going to bump it 2 degrees, i would suggest making it 4 degrees. Might as well get full advantage

Too much advance isn't always better. You probably would start to lose some upper end.

Re: Improved performance and hp from 2 degree timing advance?

without a way to measure differences, its a guessing game, or go by feel, but most of my past cars that allowed you to adjust the timing, 4 degrees always provided the best results.

It won't go four. The most anyone's been able to get it to stay has been 2. Will need to crack the ECU (I think) to get beyond 2. But there's probably not additional benefit. Most will handle two without changing to a higher grade fuel.

I might be wrong, but isn't that the difference between the Nissan and the Inifinti-advanced timing and higher octane fuel. Otherwise, it's the same motor..??

Re: Improved performance and hp from 2 degree timing advance?

Hey Guys I ran some 0-60on Wed/Thursday using Cipher to log the data and time the run.

Test proceedure:
2 runs each direction back to back after the drive home from work. I ran +2, 0, -2

First of all I want to determine:
1. Does indeed without a doubt +2/-2 timing stick through the rpm range when using Cipher.
2. Do my times suffer?
3. What effect does 87 vs 93 have?

First question please....
The answer is YES without a doubt there is timing through the rpm range as it should after adjustment.

Second Question:
No times are as expected with increased timing there was shorter ET's.
The best of 2 using 50/50 blend of 87/93 octane:
+2 at 7.20sec
0 at 7.50sec
-2 at 7.76sec

Third question:
I saw slightly richer ratios with the 93 octane according to Cipher. I saw a better 0-60 ET 93blend 7.20sec 0-60 vs 7.32sec with 87. I also saw higher RPM and 1 degree more timing at 5500. However when averaging the timing column from both fuels they were nearly identical.

Disclaimer:
These tests are for the performance minded Titan owners that understand that a Hemi with bukoo bolts ons is faster...LOL

Re: Improved performance and hp from 2 degree timing advance?

I got this done yesterday for free at a local dealerhip, and the butt dyno tells me it has more grunt in the low end.

I was leaving downtown getting on I-10, and there is a light that leads straight on to the highway. Light turned green, and I punched it to about 70. I could feel a difference in the way it jumped off the line more than anything.
