Along with Elbo and a couple others I bought the AEM clone air intake off ebay a couple weeks ago, and today I did my first real calculated mpg.
I put 21.4 gallons in this morning and had 271 miles on my trip odometer = 12.7 mpg. Keep in mind that I was getting about 11.5 before I put the intake on, and I've had my foot in it pretty steady since. I didn't really count on it helping my mpg, but hey I'll take a 1 to 1-1/2 gallon improvement.
Or is this an aberration?

I'd say this is coincidence. But if it keeps up...good for you.
Most people DO NOT see an increase in MPG from adding a less restrictive intake.

Would you mind taking a pic of it installed. I like the $$!
I'll try to shoot it tonight. Been working on a rental remodel all week......hell, for the last couple months.....and I'm so busy right now. We'll see if we can get a picture posted soon.

I took my intake off last week and checked my mileage and I lost 1 1/2 mpg. It is going back on for sure.

I have it, it's good for better fuel economy, but the downside, is it has such a cool sound when you step on it, it more or less encourages you to burn fuel.
Here is my thread, that has some installed pictures in it.
Here is a good analogy that nearly everyone can relate to.
Imagine your engine is a vacuum cleaner, sucking and blowing air. Instead of using gasoline to power the motor, it uses an electric current. If you take the suction nozzle(intake) and stuff a rag down it, what happens? The motor gets louder and increases in temperature because of the increased current(fuel) needed to do the same work as when the tube wasnt clogged.
Yes, I know that a gasoline engine is not an electric, and vice versa but the same principals apply. The whole process of increasing power in an I/C engine is to reduce pumping losses and increase efficeincy.
Something to add though...our engine doesn't suck air just to suck air like a Vacuum. It sucks in air to light a fire. More Air + More Fuel = Bigger Fire = More power. So couldn't it be that an intake does nothing to improve MPG but does improve HP?

more horsepower means better fuel economy, as the engine is producing more power to the wheels at lower rpms, less need to push the pedal as far down. this is double true for super chargers, (albeit 91/92/93 octane)
I have the clone installed too. My last fill up I got 13.5 mpg, that's up 1 mpg from the last time I checked before the install. I will monitor the next few to see if it stays true.
