Angry My experience at the dealer with the timing advance mod

I stopped in and asked about the 2 degree timing advance. "NOPE! It can't be done!" was my reply. "The ECU wont let you".

"I beg to differ," I said. "It's the talk of the internet forums."

"Well maybe they say you can do it on the internet but it cant be adjusted. It's all controlled by computer" she said.

I continued to tell her that poeple state they pay about $70 and it takes about 5 minutes and bingo...a satisfied customer!

She said "well, we charge $120 an hour and I've never had anyone ask to have it done.

Then she grabbed a tech and he continued to back her up saying that it might be possible but there is no way to do this using thier machine. They stated they used a Consult 2.

AM I MISSING SOMETHING? Isn't that the same one other dealers using to do the mod?

What can I do to convince my service department that this can be done?

Re: My experience at the dealer with the timing advance mod

It sounds like they never did it before, so they're playing it safe saying that.

Re: My experience at the dealer with the timing advance mod

Jamesn don't waste time with that dealership it is best that you don't let them work on your truck, take your business elsewhere. They just don't want to do it and if you force them to they will charge you $120 for a $70 job that will take between 5 and 10 minutes including a checkthrough of your system. It is'nt worth it IMO.

I recall that somebody posted step by step (screen by screen) instructions on how to using the Consult II software. You might print that out and take it with you.

Re: My experience at the dealer with the timing advance mod

I went to the dealer here in lake charles and they said it cant be done. So i called the dealer in lafeyette and the service manager said to bring it and some data on it and he will give it a try for $65. Thats what all dealers should do. Thats why I bought it from there.

Re: My experience at the dealer with the timing advance mod

Awsome...I found it. I'm going to take the print out and shove it in the B****'s face, figuritivly speaking. One last question (yeah...right) so I don't embarrass myself...Is this year or vehicle specific? I've got an 05 se kk. I'm sure they will deny that this works. I just want to show them the instructions and then I'll take it somewhere else.

Re: My experience at the dealer with the timing advance mod

It's not year specific for the Titan. It will work for all year models.

I'll try to answer your questions...

No, it will NOT hurt your engine. if it would, the ECU wouldn't allow the advancement. Someone here tried to advance it 4*, but it woulnd't take, so 2* is the allowable limit.
performance wise, it really increases throttle repsonse. Does it add HP, I don't know, but it's certainly noticeable (at least for me, at LOTS of others).
Someone compared it to making up the lost power from all the electrical things the Titan has.
I had it done and I noticed a much improved throttle. No lag at the lower end any longer, which is nice.
No, you don't need premium fuel, and yes, it'll stay if you reset your ECU. But if you have the ECU re-flashed, the timing advance will be gone.

Re: My experience at the dealer with the timing advance mod

It makes the spark fire a little bit sooner in the combustion process basically. The reason that you get more power, is its allowing more time for the engine to burn the fuel that is injected in, more burning = more energy created = more power

Re: My experience at the dealer with the timing advance mod

I had my Titan in today to replace the radio and I asked the service manager if he new about the 2 degree advance mod. He acted like he did but I could tell he was a bit puzzled. Anyway, I was armed with the step-by-step instructions from a few posts above. I could see the tech through the window of the service bay and it took about a half hour to replace the radio. He then grabbed the "Cheat Sheet" I printed off and within 5 minutes was done with the mod. He even gave me a printout from the Consult to show it took. My point is that the dealers may or may not know about the mod, but if you give them something to follow, they can do the job and still save face. I have a feeling it would have taken them a while had I not given them the sheet. What makes this even better is that the manager didn't charge me at all for the mod because of all my radio problems.
So far the butt dyno picks up a difference (noticable throttle response); I will post elapsed times tomorrow.
