Got an 8am appointment tomorrow morning for my install at the same place we ordered them from ( Well same building...the shop part ) ...it's really close to the Indian casino Thunder Valley so some buddies of mine are going along for the ride ....I will try and take pictures of the install if the tech is game....

Re: Tru Trac is in

First quote was as follows...

If install goes smoothly $300-$350.

If they have to remove the ring n pinion and do some shimming it could get up to around $500.

Btw, would we still use the same diff fluid? For example, I am currently using 75-140 amsoil fully synth.

Re: Tru Trac is in

that seems high on the quote, i would get a few more.....and i never reuse fluid but i do understand that amsoil isnt cheap...how long has the amsoil been in there? also the have to take the ring and pinion out to bolt it to the truetrac....im not sure i would trust these shade trees to work on my truck..

Re: Tru Trac is in

That does seem too high...even the original 300 to 350....They do NOT need to remove the pinion gear at all....the ring gear is bolted to the TruTrac and the TruTrac only...then the axle splines come in to meet either side of the TruTrac. I am going to really push getting pics of my installation tomorrow...hopefully they are ok with it....but every place I checked said 200 was a fair price for the install.

As noted above, they MUST remove the ring gear from the OEM carrier and bolt it to the TruTrac.

There is no shimming required AFAIK because the Titan rear diff uses threaded carrier bearing adjusters instead of shims.

Yes, you should use the same gear oil. Per the TrueTrac manual and per Detroit engineers, you should follows the MFR's recommendation on gear oil.

Re: Tru Trac is in

i think there is a mix-up on "same gear oil".

you need to be specific on "same TYPE of gear oil" vs. "the oil you just drained out" (putting it back in after the install).

if you drain it into a new / clean container, and it looks good and has only been in there a short while, i see no reason why you can't re-use it. i doubt the air that it get exposed to will do anything.

Re: Tru Trac is in

Well, I picked my installer. a local shop that specializes in differentials (large Mac Trucks and such) But they also work on other vehicles. Total charge will be $230. My baby will be in the shop on Wed.

Sorry, didn't think anyone would take it that way.

I meant to say to use the same type of gear oil.

I suppose you could use the same exact gear oil you just drained if you're the kind of guy who recycles beer...

Re: Tru Trac is in

Bad news for my install...went to Ed's shop next to their retail sales place and the guys were great..said no problem to having me photograph the TruTrac installation. We pull my truck in ...throw it up on the rack...pull the diff cover ...and the look on the guys face said it all, looking at the driven side of the ring gear was fine...but the coast side of the ring gear was shot.

The coast side had major scoring with scooped out sections...we all agreed installing the TruTrac wasnt going to happen....I need Nissan to replace either the ring/pinion ( Not likely ) or the whole axle assy ( Very likely ) . I will swing by my own local Nissan today to get this started. The really cool thing was the dif shop wrote me up a work order of what was needed for the diff....they buttoned my diff back up with 75w140w ....all for a zero charge...nada. I didnt think service like that was still around ? I will for sure be back there asap when I get Nissan to get my diff fixed first.

P.S. I already talked to the service manager before going to get the TruTrac installed and he was fine with ordering a new axle for me if we found problems before installing the unit...because I had already mentioned to him my diff was making some unusual noises at times. Also, almost every new Titan on his lot has 35's and a 6" lift ....so he knows thats not an issue for warranty work already

Re: Tru Trac is in

Holy cow man! Well I guess the good news is you'll have a totally new diff to hook your truetrac up to. Just going to be a little longer before all is said and done. Good luck, man!

Re: Tru Trac is in

Really good news...just got back from the dealer and a brand new entire axle assy is coming my way free of charge...with no charge for labor as well ( I thought my lift would add some labor charge but that wasn't even mentioned ). The service manager as well as the Master tech had to both talk to Nissan reps on the phone to ok the order...it went through fine...the only interesting part of the conversation was the Nissan rep asked if I towed a trailer or not ? I thought that was strange...but the transaction went through without a hitch and my new assy is on its way ( They estimated a weeks time give or take ) .

They also ( On the Nissan reps advice ) printed out a sheet for me stating how to break in the new axle assy...stating to take it easy for the first 500 miles. Once the new assy gets here and is installed and broken in properly I will return to Sacramento to get the TruTrac installed.
