True Trac and Gears

I have read some posts about you guys puting a true trac in your trucks, but I do not see anything about gears. Why? You guys not only have to deal with one wheel wonders, but aren't your gears pretty weak too?

I was just curious as to why you guys to not swap out gears when you get the locker installed. 2WD guys that is.

Re: True Trac and Gears

The 'gear' that might be weak is the spider gear. They are removed when the limited slip is installed. I don't think the ring and pinion are a problem. The TruTrac is a limited slip, not a 'locker'. Now go back into your Hemi hole.

Re: True Trac and Gears

Due to the high ratio of the ring gear the teeth are huge, no issues. Additionally noone makes gears for the Titan D44.

Re: True Trac and Gears

As kartman said, nobody makes gears for the D44. It's 32-spline, not the traditional 30. Our gears with the Tow or Off-Road package is equivalent to a 4.10 on a 4-spd, so they're really not that weak.

Re: True Trac and Gears

But if I have a non big tow truck, I can still get the true trac, correct? I'm pretty sure I can, since the true trac is only the differential and not the gears...

Re: True Trac and Gears

Exactly, it will work with any gear set available (though right now we only have 2).

Re: True Trac and Gears

Speaking of weak gears. Didn't Blackin (Hemi owner) scatter his 4.56's.

There is a thread on here about that.

I was referring to your ratio, but I guess I need to spell it out for you. A lot of the Hemi guys are putting in 4.56 gears. What is your ratio from the factory? 3.5 something?

Re: True Trac and Gears

No one really has answered the question yet.

The Titan comes with two gear sets and they both are pretty tall gears. The Big Tow/Off road Titan comes with a 3.36 rear gear and the other Titans come with a 2.96 rear gear.

At this time....no one makes a gear replacement. Tru Trac does now gives us a True LSDifferential. Some of us have a Nissan ABLS...Active Brake Limited Slip....where it sends brake to the slipping tire transferring some of the power to the other side. Seems to work ok but won't EVER replace a clutch inside the differential locking on slip.

Now.....don't misunderstand out rear gear ratio. We have low geared 5 speed transmissions. Our final gear drive equates as follows......the 3.36 Titan is similar to a final gear drive of a 4.10 Domestic Truck. And the 2.96 Titan a 3.73 Domestic truck.

Can you post the calculations for your transmission? How do you come the conclusion that your 5 speed 3.36 is the same as a 4.10 domestic truck. I have a 5 speed in my ram with 3.92. So how is your transmission geared so differently? Do you have the ratio's per gear?

Re: True Trac and Gears

Its because nissan puts the lower gears in the tranny allowing a higher ratio in the diff for better and much stronger teeth.

As long as we are spelling out factory ratios:

Titan gear ratios:

1st: 3.827 x 3.357 rear axle = 12.85
2nd: 2.368 x 3.357 rear axle = 7.95
3rd: 1.52 x 3.357 rear axle = 5.10
4th: 1 x 3.357 rear axle = 3.36
5th: .834 x 3.357 rear axle = 2.80

Dodge 545RFE ratios:

1st: 3 x 3.92 rear axle = 11.76
2nd: 1.67 x 3.92 rear axle = 6.55
3rd: 1 x 3.92 rear axle = 3.92
4th: .75 x 3.92 rear axle = 2.94
5th: .67 x 3.92 rear axle = 2.63

The question is why does the Dodge come from the factory with downhill gearing?

I think 1st is like 3.50, We don't get to a 1:1 ratio until 4th gear. Someone will post the ratios. The Rams ratios are much higher judging from the videos I have seen showing the Ram doing 60 in 1st and 90 in 2nd. If you watch some Titan videos you see the tranny in action. About 40 in 1st and 70 in 2nd with 3.36's.

Re: True Trac and Gears

It's not my conclusion. It's Nissans Statement. I will see if I can find the ratios of each gear on the Titan.

Re: True Trac and Gears

That's a pretty impressive tranny you guys have. Would be nice if mine was that stout. I guess that is a good question, why does Dodge make their tranny's so crappy? If we had the same tranny gearing as you, game over.
