Help W/ Timing Advance

Would some one please PM me or post a link that shows the instructions for the timing advance? I am going to the dealer this coming wednesday to get it done and they don't have a clue. I have done searches for it here and can't find what I'm looking for, I am stupid because I have read posts with excellent instructions I can print and give to the tech. I just can't make the search tool work for me! Thanks in advance, 2 degrees to be exact.

Re: Help W/ Timing Advance

The UpRev site (maker of Cipher) posted a before and after dyno comparison. They found about 5-6HP increase with the 2 degree advance. I found that the off-the-line acceleration is much better with it.

Re: Help W/ Timing Advance

LandMan sent me a copy of a couple of his "Pre-2 Degree" logs from Cipher. He is going to do a couple after the mod to see the difference. Hopefully the ambient conditions will be close. Either he or I will post the results.

DC, I guess you didn't have enough time to pull some before and afters; I know I forgot all about it.

Re: Help W/ Timing Advance

Hellions: You are right - no time for before and after runs. I road tested the advance on my way to Texas.

Most people running the timing advance is using regular gas with no knocking.

Re: Help W/ Timing Advance

I have a couple dumb questions...

1) How much should I expect to pay to get this performed at the dealer?

2) Is it ok to do this on a stock truck w/ only the stock airbox mod or should I wait until I get a CAI and exhaust?

Thanks for your help guys,
Justin

The cost is anywhere from free up to $90.00 (the highest I've seen posted on the boards). Although I now have access to the Cipher software, the mod was actually done by my local dealer for free because I just asked nice, really! Actually I did ask nice, but I was in having my radio replaced for the 4th time with under 3000 miles on the truck.

Go ahead and do the mod before you do the other mods. It won't hurt anything. You'll probably still do an ECU reset after each mod anyway.

Hope this helps.

That was not what I was asking. I was asking if your trucks have knock sensors that would require you to use higher octane fuel. For example, in the Dodge Ram, if you run Superchips program on the 91 octane setting, you will not get the benefit unless you use at least 91 octane fuel. If you do not, the truck's knock sensors would kick in and retard the timing and basically render the superchips useless. So my question is do you need to run higher octane fuel in your trucks. If you do not have knock sensors (which I would find hard to believe if you didn't), then you would hear the knocking. If you do have them, then you wouldn't hear them knocking, because your computer is retarding your timing and making your 2 degree timing mod useless.

Just my .02

I got mine done for free as well, the tech didn't care and was actually curious if it would work. I didn't have instructions with me and had to wing it, but got it right!!

It all depends on who you get messing with you truck, but I honestly wouldn't pay more than $20 for it, under the table of course. It really takes 2 minutes or less to complete, once the consult is hooked up.
