Question Throttle body gasket screen?

Has anyone don't any type of testing of performance or gas milage changes removing the half screen between the throttle body and the intake manifold? I was wondering if this was the most restrictive point of the intake after installing a cold air intake and a cat back exhaust system to free up the air flow. I asked the dealer about it, but they seemed to feel that the screen was to straighten out air flow. I was wondering if anyone has removed the screen from the rubber O-ring gasket and what they experienced doing this.

Re: Throttle body gasket screen?

People are removing it in conjunction with a Throttle Body Spacer. The screen kind of fights what a TBS is supposed to do by straightening out the air flow.

I don't recall anyone without a TBS cutting the screen out.

Re: Throttle body gasket screen?

Actually, several people did it a while back. I know the head gr8titan, and a few others that I can't remember right now did it.
They did this without adding the TBS.

Re: Throttle body gasket screen?

OK, some have and some haven't taken it out, so if u have or not have the TBS and cut it out, has it helped? Does it set off the CEL? Is there any real harm even in taking it out, even without a CAI?

I have to ask myself why the super smart Nissan Engineers put it there in the first place.....

Re: Throttle body gasket screen?

i took it out, i dont think there is any real benefit.. it dont look that restrictive as the holse are at least 1/8'' and it only goes in the top half of the TB... i took it out because i heard something about it and i did it in my s-10 extreme.. the s-10 one was in the maf and extremely (no pun intended) restrictive... didnt know what the one in the titan looked like.. i wouldnt do it now knowing what i do but if i was going to put a TBS in i would remove it... just be careful... use the proper allen head they are metric remember.. and they are tight, and youll need a good set of cutters, my snap-ons barely got through the metal without bending the metal in the rubber,, but if it does bend jsut straighten it out and it will seal good, so far no probs and its been 1000 miles.... any other questions let me know....

Re: Throttle body gasket screen?

I put in a TBS and didn't remove it.

Is the TBS working-that I can't answer b/c I added a CAI a week earlier.

I will say that I can hear the TBs whistling, which is when it's supposedly working.

Re: Throttle body gasket screen?

i think the airbox snorkel is the most restrictive part of the intake.. the part in the box needs to be removed and then it will flow just as good as any aftermarket kit with i drop-in ( i have nothing to back it up as i know someone will attack this statement) but the tube that actually goes through the fender is plenty big enough and the rest is bigger than the throttle body itself, and there are no sharp bends (with the exception of the snorkel inside the box) but with that removed viola.. free flowing...

Re: Throttle body gasket screen?

Just to let you know. You do not have to CUT it out. It can be easily removed if you take the O-ring out first.

maybe mine was different because i took the throttle body off and there was no way to remove the screen from the o-ring/gasket without cutting it....

That's what I found as well. I installed a TBS yesterday, and I cut out the screen with my dremel. It was very easy, I just had to go slow to make sure I didn't slip and cut the ring itself. Looking at it, there was no other way to get it out on mine without cutting.

To answer the original post, I have heard it is best to leave it in with the stock throttle body, and remove it with a TBS, since the screen counteracts the swirl produced by the TBS.

Re: Throttle body gasket screen?

i *think* it may be there to induce turbulance at low rpm for better low end response....
