Full Exhaust System or jsut the muffler? Please help!!!!
I have heard from many people including Greg from PRG that you really dont get much of a gain over the stock exhaust when installing a cat back system by companies like Banks, Zoomers, Borla etc. Basically you're just paying for the sound. (which is pretty awesome) More than a few people have told me to just get the muffler of your choice and slap it in with the stock exhaust. Same sound, almost same if not the same power and less $$$$. Something else about back pressure and Y pipe that you dont want to mess with when thinking about a full exhaust. ( I wont even pretend to act like I know what I just said). Please shed any light on this that you can for me. Thanks...

The engineers that developed the factory exhaust system had alot of restrictions placed on them such as cost, full throttle decible levels, fitment and probably a thousand other things that we'll never know about....but even harnest with all that, they still managed to develope a fairly effecient exhaust system....If it's a little extra power and better exhaust note with minimal expence that you're after, swap out the muffler...that's what I did...$80 bucks....if you want a little extra power and a more noticable exhaust note and prefer a couple of crome exhaust tips sticking out the back, look into an aftermarket cat-back system.

Wow Mr. B... I though the solution would be to buy a Scaremaro.

so basically the muffler if like 90% of the overall power and effect? Why do people spend so much more money for just a little bit of more power if any? I think im mising something.

With the magnaflows the system is all stainlees which is better then the OEM, plus it looks much nicer with the chrome tip

With my banks, not only is it 100% stainless, but the difference in size and the way the piping was bent was huge. This was especially noticed from the exhaust manifold when the system goes 2-1. The banks was much larger and the bends were not as sharp as the stock. Banks also advertises a huge decrease in backpressure, like 90% and help fuel efficency. It also has a lifetime warranty...
For me, I liked the idea of having a high flow muffler fitted with a high flow system. It probably comes down to budget and the amount of sound that you want. I recently rode in a titan with a magnaflow muffler installed into the stock system. The sound was better than stock, but no where near the banks. I like my truck loud, so if you have the extra $$'s to get a complete system and you want a louder and more powerful truck go with a full system.
Just my thoughts...

Here are the findings from another forum member, actual dyno testing:
So one conclusion that I was able to come to is that the 5.6 loves back pressure. That is where the low end torque comes from as does the max torque. It is funny that the 3 systems that produced the best numbers (hp and torque) used the smallest diameter Y-pipe and 2 of those were with the STOCK Y-PIPE and the other has the same diamter as the stock y-pipe. The dual systems lost speed in the lower range (below 40 mph) and I am convinced that is because of the minimal torque gains and I believe loss of back pressure. So if you want pure sound, the duals are the way to go. But if you want performance, the single exits with the smaller Y-pipe proved to be the best.

Thanks for that sudden urge!! I think I will just go for the muffler install. A few people have told me now that the back pressure is the torque. I dont want to loose any of it by changing out the pipe. Thanks

I can only hope one day to fill your shoes. What size are they again? 6's or 7's? LOL! Just kidding. Thanks for the insight. Where would we all be without forums??? And for the record, MagnaFlo was at the top of my list. I want something loud but not crazy loud.
Re: Full Exhaust System or jsut the muffler? Please help!!!!
My Zoomers has 2 inch y pipe primaries that feed the 3 inch pipe all the way back. The small Y keeps the torque and it really has a robust low end combined with the TBS.
I prefer the full systems personally, but stay with the smaller Y if you do. The Stillen and Magnaflow are nice too, they keep the stock Y and have 3 inch pipes after the muffler back to a nice tip.
