Muffler neck size question???

First off let me say I am thinking about getting just a muffler install and not the whole system. That being said, a guy at a muffler shop just told me that it may be a good idea to get a muffler with a 3" in and out that he can reduce down to a 2.5" so it will fit the stock pipe. His reason was that if I wanted to go with a full sys later, I could keep the muffler and go with a 3" sys. Any thoughts or suggestions on this??

Re: Muffler neck size question???

That doesn't make sense to me. If you later decide on a full system, that would probably be a catback which includes a new muffler with the kit. The current 2.5" pipes are more than adequate for 350 hp.

That may or may not be a good idea on other vehicles but this engine needs back pressure. The truck would run like crap with 3" pipe.

Re: Muffler neck size question???

the truck will not run like crap with 3" piping. it will actually be better. the only thing you need to make sure is not to touch your y-pipe so you keep your pressure for the low end torque. i got a 3" piping from the y-pipe back with a magnaflo muffler and it sounds nice. i have a little more torque and truck is a little more responsive...
