I've read about the 2 degree timing advance, and I'm interested in doing it because I always run E85 or Premium anyway. But I'm confused. I thought the ECU was smart enough to advance the timing to correspond to the grade of fuel being burned? If this is true, what is the timing advance doing? Will this allow a higher maximum advance? Is the computer still smart enough to retard the timing if needed? Thanks.

not to be an a$$, but in the 4 dozen timing threads could u not find the answer your looking for ??
Works great for me. I use 87 oct in my truck. I do notice a difference when mine was done. You have to find a dealer that will do it for you. You need to search the threads here to learn about the 2 deg timing advance.

P, be nice! He's new and maybe doesn't know how to use the search engine yet. It sets the idle timing up 2, and thus affects the entire range. Yes, the ecu will modify the timing as needed, but only when pushing the engine, controling the air, fuel, and timing for best results. Hope this helps.
If you would like help in searching for things, just ask.
Oh, and Welcome to Titan Talk.

Ok, I'll be nice
Tornado.. using the boolean search I found 182 threads with keywords Timing & Advance. This should help you out. When you do search for something use the boolean search, it takes out words like and, if, the, etc....

Yes, I know how to use the Search, and I have do so numerous times. And I know there are at least a dozen requests saying, "where can I get this done". I thought my question was a little more technical. Let me reword it. If the computer controls timing advance (as well as a gazillion other things), what am I really changing? 1) the baseline (idle) timing advance 2) the maximum allowed timing advance 3) the entire range...in other words, whatever the computer would have said, add 2 degrees.
I'm assuming #3, but I do not think I have seen that answered anywhere. If it is #3, that would seem more harmful to the engine if you ran low grade fuel.
Think of the timing advance as modifying your static, or initial timing, such as you would set your distrributor. The ECU advances/retards the timing from this point, just like mechanical and vacuum advance on a distributor. Go to the UpRev site to see the dyno of before and after the 2 degree timing advance. It is worth the investment.
