Re: Stock Y pipe junction NOT a good design

just did the +2 timing on my banks/cai and got back my low end. truck now feels like its on steriods.

this completely blows away stock, no dynos, just seat of the pants feel.

noticed an increase in temp, but still below the half way mark on the temp gauge.

damn this thing is awesome now. even feels smoother with the +2, and tranny doesnt downshift as much as it did without the +2. thanks guys for all the tips!

Do you have a handle on your average fuel economy before doing this? Keep an eye on that and let us know if you see much difference. Then again, you may be too busy using the right pedal to worry about fuel mileage! LOL!!

step 1, cai only: exhaust temp went up a bit, slight loss of low end, mpg slightly less.

step 2, TBS added: low end returned, mpg improved

step 3, Banks installed: exhaust temp dropped almost back to stock(cooler), mpg slightly worse because motor had to perform at about 100 rpm higher to reach the low end power, but on level ground, mpg seemed to improve because tranny would stay in lower gear. otherwise tranny would downshift earlier than in step 2.

step 4, +2 advance added: temp went back up a bit, about 10-15 degrees F,
good low end is back and feeling smoother, mpg improved because higher rpm not needed.

question: dealer claims that +2 will cause motor to run leaner. is this because fuel is burnt ealier in the stroke leaving less fuel remainding for the normal part of the stroke of the piston?

is this harmful in the long run, and can raised temp be due partly to this?

thanks!

Though I can't speak for other owners with larger diameter exhausts, I personally gained power accross the RPM band.
0-60 ft decreased from 2.3 to 2.1 seconds
Trap speed increased from 87 to 90.6 mph.
ET improved from 15.5 to 15.0 seconds.

If you're interested in more timeslips, Dragtimes has data of tabulated timeslips voluntarily submitted by members. It also list their mods including what type of exhaust they're running. Interesting data.

Re: Stock Y pipe junction NOT a good design

After reading all this I'm considering that I should but a new Y-pipe...why? Just because of the gains across the bands. The stock Y-pipe is good if you gonna Tow stuff or haul big loads. It keeps the low tourqe band the TITAN is good for. But for us speed junkies...we don't really tow....or we occasionally tow a load.....so low end tourqe isn't much of a big issue....all we want is more power...thats where the new Y-pipe will come in. Considering my options....any suggestions on what Y-pipe I should get?

agreed. I am glad I got the Volant with the slightly larger y-pipe. I feel there is gains all across the board with it. They also included an additional pipe and clamp if I wanted to keep the stock y-pipe.

This hurts the guy pulling his 6500 lb. trailer at the 2000 to 2500 rpm range. He will have to rev the engine higher to get to the same towing torque that they used to have with the smaller Y-pipe.
More dramatic changes can be seen when changing size and length of headers and intake runners. Thats when going bigger could not only move the torque curve, but also raise HP at the cost of peak torque numbers.
If you want to go fast, go big. If you want to pull well, stay small.
Believe this man. He knows what he is talking about. Less back pressure are great for turbocharged vehicles but in this case we are talking about a N/A vehicle. If you go big you will loss torque down low to mid but will gain it in the upper rpm. People go big because they want to drag race and need that big surge of power in the upper rpms when shifting.

For you drag racers out there, this would be a good idea but if I was going this route, I would also do the headers at the same time too.

that nasty stock y pipe was gone within the first 2 months of owning the truck, just looking at it it's amazing the truck moves at all,lol restricting the airflow down that much can't be good for the motor in my eyes, let her breathe!!
