Stock Y pipe junction NOT a good design

For all you guys tha claim that the stock Y is a highly efficient design for the titan exhaust, think again.

While removing the stock Y to install my banks, I noticed that where it bolts on to the resonators, it decreases from the 3" resonator into a 2.25" or 2.5" stock Y tubing.

And this is not a gradual or tapered transition at all. there is a copper gasket in between the two different sized piping with the 2.25 opening. So what you have stock is, a 3" resonator pipe cut off by a 2.25 gasket into the Y pipe.

Can you immagine the turbulance caused by this drastic step reduction?

So before you just cut off the muffler and weld on a "big flow special," think first of what you are actually getting.

BTW, I have not lost any low end torque with the Banks set up, as many have warned.

Thanks for tuning in

Re: Stock Y pipe junction NOT a good design

Lets see the before and after Dyno to prove it. We all know it is smaller but many have also learned that the 5.6 likes some backpressure. So if thats what you think thats fine. I dont think many will agree with you though.

Resonator (B pipe) is not 3", it's 2.25.

Re: Stock Y pipe junction NOT a good design

A person at another club has proved with dynos that the Titan likes the smaller diameter Y-pipes. Hence JBA and Magnaflow(which uses stock Y) did really well in the Dyno tests.

Banks was not tested however.

I agree. This has been proven on a dyno.

Re: Stock Y pipe junction NOT a good design

That's why I went with Zoomers, 2 inch Y pipe into 3 inch at the collector.

Re: Stock Y pipe junction NOT a good design

you need the smaller diameter for the y-pipe to keep the back pressure which in turns produces torque for the titan. that is why stillen, borla...etc. keep the stock y-pipe.....

Re: Stock Y pipe junction NOT a good design

according to dyno testing done it's actually better with it than without. but it's your choice.

really? then why does the 3' gasket supplied with the banks kit match up with the diameters? are we talking about the same thing?

what i am saying is, if the transition is not tapered, but a drastic step to a smaller pipe, that is not a good design.

let me put it this way, if you were pissing into a straw, it would be a mess. but if you pissed into a funnel that went into the straw, you could walk away clean.

the flowmaster guys in town, want to just cut off your muffler and throw a flowmaster with dual pipes for $400. easy money for them, and justification that the stock Y is the best bet. i say they are ripping off.

I even ask them if they have the American Thunder cat back series, and they hege and haw. "oh that one uses the same size Y as stock, may as well just replace mufflers."

that is one reason i went with the banks. maybe cause i have the tbs, but my low end is good if not better as with the stock, cai, and tbs.

maybe it dont meake sense, but scientists also cant explain why bumble bees can fly either.
