What is "timing advance"?

I've been reading about folks who have had their timing advance tinkered with and am curious as to what the heck this is? I've tried looking around the internet, but couldn't find anything. So exactly what does your timing advance do? Thanks...

Re: What is "timing advance"?

Advancing the timing means starting the combustion event earlier in the compression cycle as the piston approaches Top Dead Center. Most of the time this results in more power by giving the air fuel mixture more time to burn. Retarding the timing usually results in the opposite. There are exceptions and lots of variables involved though and getting into too much detail would run this thread to 50 pages...

Re: What is "timing advance"?

I used to adjust the timing on cars a few years back, so I have a decent timing light, question is, can you even use a timing light to set these anymore? Are there still marks on the lower pulley? The Titan doesn't have a distributor, so where can you adjust?
Or is this a hook up to computer and change now a days?

No distrubutor, Titan have direct ign. I think it has to be done via the ODB2 port.

Re: What is "timing advance"?

YEs, the OBDll Port is used, with a program such as UpRev's Cipher or Nissan's Consult2 or 3 to adjust it in the computer. Some dealer are willing to adjust for free to 90 dollars, some will say no (search for more info). The Cipher is owned by several individuals (cost 400 dollars) and you may get it done by anyone who has it. Sometimes free, usually about 50 bucks.

One of the best mods, glad I bought the Cipher. I've done most of the Titans in our local club. The guys love it.

Re: What is "timing advance"?

A few horsepower, and a LOT of grins! I think a handful of horses. 4 or 5. I can't remember. Someone dyno'd this, but the exact number escapes me.

Re: What is "timing advance"?

Better throttle response is my main butt-dyno way to put the gain. It's not a lot of extra ooomph. But as bang for the buck, it's nice. Now when I say go, it seems to go better/smoother. It goes NOW, not later. Especially while rolling. Make sense? I don't know really how to put it, other than me likey!!!!

Re: What is "timing advance"?

If you're around one of the guys that have the software, they might even hook you up for little to nothing. But yeah, I'd do it. Shop around for someone to get the best deal. Free is always best!!!! Thank you to the TT member who hooked me up!

Re: What is "timing advance"?

Is there a base line of where to start? 3-4-5 Degrees? I am going to have this done I just dont want to have to keep going back. I know on older cars we would go until the valves rattled and retard 1-2 degrees.
