Question about replacing stock muffler...

I replaced the stock muffler with the 40 series flowmaster and was wondering if I increased the diameter from the muffler back or between the y-pipe and the muffler, how would the sound change?

BTW it does sound awesome but I want to clean the sound up kinda I guess is what I am trying to do.

Re: Question about replacing stock muffler...

I use to "micro-manage" my exhaust sound too ..... I spent a small fortune several years back trying to get a specific sound out of an old Ferd I had .... I was somewhat successful ..... to answer your question to the best of my knowledge, a larger diameter pipe after the muffler will yeild a slightly louder sound, but not enough to justify the cost .... I've been led to believe that replacing the "Y' pipe will not yeild enough performance gains to justify the cost of it either .... the computer that controls our engines does not allow much in performance gains and untill that code gets hacked into by the aftermarket, enjoy your FloMaster.

Re: Question about replacing stock muffler...

Putting megaphone type exhaust tips will lower the pitch. Messing with anything else could decrease performance as the flow would speed up and slow down depending on pipe size. I have a super 40 and noticed it sounds different depending where it dumps. I found that underneath the cab is not an option, way to loud and got old after a week. In front of the rear tire is OK but changes pitch a lot (sounds funny) when near a wall or car. Behind the rear tire is the best I found. Have not tried straight out the back, tired of spending money and think it leaves crap on the bumper/tailgate (judged from the many diesels I see around here).

Re: Question about replacing stock muffler...

Thanks guys. I think the first thing I will try is taking the last section of pipe off at the flange since it is free to do.
