I have heard talk about this mod but wanted to know a few things. How much will it help? Can it hurt anything? Can I do it myself? Will it void my warenty(I don't see why I couldn't just change it back if I need some work done)?
You can do it youreself if you have access to the Consult 2 (about $6-$7K) or software such as the Cipher ($400). It will not hurt anything, the consult and other software only allow for a change of +-2* at idle.

Advancing is one of the easiest ways to get more power. On my '98 Chevy I used a Hypertech programmer and that was all it did was advance the timing. Made a huge difference. Find a dealer to do it.
I had my timing advance done this morning. In reguards to if the ECU will lose the advance if the battery is disconnected, the service tech said that short periods of time will not affect the tune, such as swapping batteries but if the ECU loses its memory the advance will go back to stock. I read a post on CT where someone had there battery disconnected for like 6 hrs while doing some sort of install and the advance was lost. So "short periods of time" is anyones guess.

so it hurts your ecu, since your back to crappy tune on the ECU, or what?

The 2 degree Timing Advance may be erased and revert to 15 Degree BTDC Intitial Timing Advance, if battery is disconnected for a long period of time (varies truck to truck). It does not "hurt" your ECU in any way, to say so is a very misleading statement. Nothing is ever "hurt" by this MOD, and certainly going back to stock doesn't "hurt" anything. Performance reverts to the excellent Nissan tune. We prefer better than excellent.

No harm to the ECU. I believe it just erases the ECU memory reverting it back to day one, before it "learned" certain things such as throttle position due to driving habits.
Alot of people reset (clear out) the ECU after mods, such as air intake or exhaust so it relearns optimal settings for the mod right off instead of it taking a while for the ECU to aadjust to mod.
I did this on my Maxima often since the Drive By Wire throttle would seem sluggish after it learned driving styles, probably due to a lot of city driving.
