I've just put on an 18" Magnaflow muffler with the stock piping, and I love it!!! But, I want to put a decent looking tip on, and here's where I'm confused. I always thought that the stock pipes were 2.5". When I went outside and measured the end of the tailpipe, it was right at 3". Anyone know anything about this? Thanks in advance. BTW i'm leaning toward a slashed cut Gibson tip.

The last 13" or so of the OEM tailpipe is 3", look further up and you will see that it is a welded on factory tip. The Diameter right before the factory tip is 2.5" right at the hanger. You can clearly see where I cut off most of the tip in my pic below

Gottcha, thanks. Of course the 3" tips are more expensive, and the shortest one from Gibson is 12 inches. To do that, i'll have to cut off more tailpipe than i wanted to; or have the tip stick out 6" out the side of the truck which would be stupid.

For the purist, MagnaFlow has a decent selection of tips. I have a custom dual tip (single exhaust) with Polished SS M-F Tips. I just hate mixing brands if the name shows...

Or you could order a tip that you really like and put it under a chop saw and cut it to length....

I have a 4" Magnaflow tip, and I REALLY like the way it looks. There's a picture in my sig, but here's a higher quality pic as well as a side shot of the truck with the tip showing:
