A 2.94 to 3.36 swap can be done on a 2wd. You will have to get your ECU reflashed for big tow or youe crusie will act funny. If you are 4x4 or already have big tow there are no options that I know of. I have a 3.36 ring and pinion that I would sell...
As you probably know, there are only two ratios available for the Titan. Changing one to another would require that you have a ring and pinion for the other ratio. AFAIK, Nissan doesn't sell the ring and pinion apart from the entire rear axle assembly.
Assuming you came up with a ring and pinion somewhere (Ebay, dumpster diving at the dealer), and you got whatever necessary parts are required to mount the new pinion (shims? crush spacer? seal? - refer to service manual), there would still be potential issues with speedo, ECU and transmission control electronics (shift points, etc.), although, depending on the size of your tires relative to stock, these might be canceled out to some extent.
Since you are 4 x 2, you don't have to worry about matching the ratio in the front diff.
Somebody else recently posted about changing the center section of the rear axle housing (pumpkin) with the center section from a Dana 70u which reportedly uses the same spline count and diameter axles. This would be more involved as far as removing the axle tubes and welding them on to the 70u center section, but, if feasible, allow a wider variety of gear ratios.
Finally, it has been reported (which doesn't mean that it will happen soon) that new gears and ratios from aftermarket mfgs for the Titan are in the works.
Also, it has been reported that the 2008 rear diff uses stronger axle shafts. I have not seen any specifics relative to diameter and spline count.
The rear is basically a Dana44 with 32 spline axles.
Would it be too much to assume that other ring and pinions sets made for the Dana44 would fit??

My understanding is that the Titan's ring gear is bigger than a standard Dana 44 and that the bolt holes are also differently located.
Do you know if anybody has seriously looked into this?

Austin's writeup was just incredible! I had to save that site in my favorites! I now have a better idea of things to observe on my original 06 OEM Rear. I've kept it forsome reason. Only 18K and perfect condition, but I'll never go back form the TT!
IIRC, though one place says our ring gear is 9", I've seen it measured at 8.875". But anyways, nope, can't interchange with regular Dana 44's. This must be the question of the week again! LOL.
