Took off muffler...?

My buddy at work took off his muffler, so now hes running just his cats. I asked him if hurt his performance any, and he says he didnt notice any loss. At lunch I went out and listened to it and it wasn't too much louder than stock, just a deeper tone, although i did hear a couple pops when he reved it...not loud pops but you do notice them. Anyway is this gonna mess anything up to where hes gonna be payin a sh*t load of money to fix, cause if its not im prolly gonna do the same thing too, but i thought i'd ask first before we both mess up our trucks...

Nope, won't hurt anything. I cut my muffler off and welded on a 2ft piece of pipe with a turndown, I had it like that for a while but eventually the drone got to me. lol. Long trips at highway speeds will give you a headache. I did notice a small loss on low end performance, but it wasn't a huge difference, and it sounded good until you got it above 3k RPMs. I would recommend welding a piece of pipe on to get the end of your exhaust past your cab so the drone isn't completly unbareable though. But for $10, it sounded great until I got it over 3k RPMs then it popped pretty bad. Actually, I'm probably going to put it back on .

Re: Took off muffler...?

what does that do when it comes time to get truck inspected as i live in texas. i already have my flowmaster dumping out under back of cab. the drone is bearable but louder is always better.

You have to have some kind of a muffler if you live in texas. Unless you can find someone that will inspect it that dosent care about a muffler, but that person is hard to find.

Re: Took off muffler...?

if you wanna really hear something loud, unbolt them at the headers/after the cats, it is so retartedly loud, but the drone will make your head cave in

Re: Took off muffler...?

I Have An 08 Titan And I Have A Custom Exhaust. That I Designed. Being An 08 My Truck Already Has True Deuals All The Way Back Almost To The Axle So I Designed A Custom H/x Pipe. Kinda A Cross Of Both And Installed It. And Just Had Two Tail Pipes Made, With No Mufflers And It Sounds Really Really Deep. But Has No Crack At All. Before I Put On The H/x Pipe It Cracked Really Bad. But I Had Loss Of Low End Torque. It Was Really Noticeable. After I Put The H/x Pipe On, It Now Has Way More Torque And Runs So Much Better. And The Best Part Is I Only Have $140 Bucks In The Whole Exhaust. Since I Did All The Install Part My Self.

Do you have any pics or vids? I've thought about doing something similar to my 08 but haven't decided for sure yet.

Did you make the x-pipe yourself, or did you buy it somewhere??

Re: Took off muffler...?

Sorry For The Bad Grammer. Was In A Hurry, What I Was Trying To Say Was, I Had It Made @ A Local Muffler Shop That Does Mandreal Bends. I Meashured Up Everything And Told Him How I Wanted It. And Installed It My Self. This Past Weekend I Dropped The Exhaust At The Flanges Just After The Resonators & Gutted Them. Still Look Like Stock But There Is No More Core To Them. Welded A 1" Wood Drill Bit On A Piece Of 3/8" Round Stock, And It Was Plenty Long Enough. Drilled Through That Stuff Like Hot Butter. Now It's Even Deeper Yet!
